Santa Cruz New Tech MeetUp - June

Dream Inn - Aquarius (map)

Selected By:

The June 10th Meetup will be a presentation + panel discussion on alternative energy sources. Networking starts at 7pm. At 7:30pm, there will be brief presentations by three industry experts covering solar, wind, and biodiesel technologies, followed by a panel discussion. Each speaker will explain how their technology is segmented, for example residential versus commercial uses, and will then provide an overview of their solution. Local green tech entrepeneur Michael "Merc" Martinelli will then lead a panel discussion covering topics such as the local potential for the technology and what conventional energy sources it replaces. As always there will be opportunities for audience participation and Q&A.

Our speakers are:

Jeff Gigoux, Vice President of Product Management & Business Development, Mariah Power. Founded in 2005 in Reno, Nevada, Mariah Power was established to develop innovative and proprietary new technology that introduces a new standard for style and function to the small wind industry. The company’s first wind power appliance, Windspire® wind turbine, was launched on June 2, 2008. Mariah Power continues to be recognized as a “innovative” company with awards from Popular Science, Going Green 100 and TieCon 50. The Windspire was also recently featured on the season finale of, “Extreme Home Makeover.”

Ray Kemp, President & CEO, KF3 BioDiesel Production.
KF3 invented and provisions the patent-pending Bee Hive modular system for producing biodiesel fuel from waste vegetable oil. KF3 "Hive Systems" are used by individuals, groups of individuals and businesses. The Hive System is a modular four cell fuel processing system. The Micro Hive produces 45 gallons of fuel per process cycle and is appropriate for home use. The Macro Hive produces 250 gallons of fuel per process cycle and its modular nature allows it to scale to any desired commercial or industrial volume. Fueling cells are typically configured as a single cell that functions as a stand alone fuel station for home or private business use. KF3 currently has active Macro Hives, Micro Hives, and Fueling Cells located from Morro Bay to San Francisco, including several in Santa Cruz.

Ed Bless, President, Blueline Power.
Blueline Power designs, installs and promotes Commercial-scale Clean Energy Systems, including solar electric, wind, biofuel, biomass and sustainability Projects. Blueline Power matches clean, abundant, locally-available resources with the latest technologies. Blueline's core services include wind analysis and installation, and commercial solar electric and large residential solar electric design and installation. Blueline also offers a unique energy mapping service that includes a site assessment and expert analysis of energy usage (loads) and naturally-occurring clean energy resources (such as sunlight, wind, biomass, water).

Let's make the networking really productive: how about a topic that we can get to know one another with -- like: how are we involved in green tech or how would we like to be involved? If we have a given topic then that's a great ice breaker! Any other ideas?

We are all entrepreneurs in some way or another -- here is a very short, sweet video I found that is inspiring and encouraging about following your dream and taking it big ;) http://www.youtube.com/user/GetGrasshopper

First time attending. Very worthwhile. Several friends in audience who appeared to be regulars.
  • Lora Lee Chapman
First one I have been able to attend, I will be back!
  • Thomas Howard
Met a few new people with diverse backgrounds and skills.
  • Ken Pedrotti
Panelists should have been on the other side of the screen for greater visibility.

It was my first time at a MeetUp so that must be taken into account. The networking was good. The format was good and the time allocated was good too. A little more real context for the presenters would have been helpful i.e., what is the overall "green" challenge that is being contemplated, what are the current data and how do the presenters fit into the overall picture (by sector). This could have been done in 5 minutes and would have grounded us in how marginal the players really are and nonetheless how important everyone's contribution is in mitigating the potential disaster that the current state portends. I'd be glad to help if this filed is addressed in the future.
  • Seana Norvell
It was great. I just wish there had been an ATM near by to get cash for drinks and a little bit more networking time!
  • Kyle
I really liked this topic, so naturally I liked the meetup.
  • David Britton
Best Meetup yet! New venue is spectacular! Attendance was overwhelming! Need I say More?
  • Jaime Snyder
It was well organized--my first time. Found the experience positive.
  • George Sisson
The new venue was great. I thought the presentations were well-focused, and I appreciated the pace (brisker, rather than more drawn out). Keeping the discussion focused on a clear topic (i.e. alternative energy/fuel applications) also made the event more appealing. I'm definitely planning on attending more of these events. I also appreciated the opportunity to network and "open mic" at the end.
  • William Menchine
This was one of the best Meetups that I have attended. The speakers were good and the new format with moderator worked well.
  • Jon Gundersgaard
It was a great meeting. I met some really wonderful people and saw people I know and had not seen for a while. Presentations were great.
  • Steven Olson
Wow! Incredible venue, everyone could see and hear, great presentations....nicely done!
  • James Turk
It would have been nice to have an integrator of the technologies that were explained. IMHO it will take a combination of solar, wind, and petrochemical electrical generation, with electrical storage technology to break the fossil fuel habit. I'd like to hear from someone who is designing a comprehensive system integrating several of the technologies. The presenters were fantastic, and certainly gave me a new perspective on energy generation and usage.
  • Steve Penny
Great combination of sun, wind and biodesel. Most memorable lines delivered: Photovoltaics last... Low profile wind resources that are usable in urban environment with low profile noise - excellently followed up with Doug's comment about wind surfers in Santa Cruz and the presenter's comments about low noise... The advantages of Algae being rootless and non competitive with food for biodesel The assesment of each of the presenters regarding their contribution to the bigger picture

  • Ray Matteis
great subject matter. a very good mix of people from varied positions. Very interesting company overviews, with a LOT of timely information.
  • Cheryl-Meetup
Great speakers. I learned some new facts. Thanks.
  • Alan Peevers
Well organized, good-to-excellent speakers. Fantastic venue. Will definitely come again.
  • Kevin Bell
Social - I'm generally very good in one-on-one to small group sized conversations, kinda shy in bigger settings. This was big, and worked best for people who already know each other. It was not ideal for a newcomer such as myself. Content - Shallow. Five minutes each plus questions doesn't begin to get to the questions and issues that matter. You don't ever really get past the elevator pitch. Furthermore, while the three speakers were interesting, the brutal reality is that all of them are niche players. None of the things that they were describing will fundamentally change the vector of our energy infrastructure, or noticeably slow our headlong rush towards catastrophic climate change. These are the important and genuinely transformative kinds of conversations that groups like this one should be having.
  • Trevor Strudley
This was my first Meetup, and it certainly will not be my last. I was delighted to see that Santa Cruz continues to be a thriving hotbed of innovation and brainpower.
  • Richard Vigurs
Very good meeting! Location and general facilities were a huge improvement. I thought the presentations from subject matter experts were informative and well prepared to fit the time allowed. Perhaps consider scheduling a little more time for each. All in all an enjoyable evening.
  • Walt Froloff
Great feeling of high tech support in the SC community. Lots of talent to tap into and good to know whats available.
