I personally agree completely with this latest sentiment, but I also do know that some people are touchy about getting any extra e-mail.  Perhaps a good compromise would be to offer to include any ad copy from sponsors like HP at the bottom of e-mails already going out, like the monthly announcement.  That should actually be better for HP, since it would be in an e-mail people would actually be reading.

Our lives are full of "and now a word from our sponsor" to pay for content we love to get inexpensively; there should be a reasonable way to do that here as well.

I also don't mind the ad.
As a plus, HP is one of the few major mfg who proudly states that their machines support
open source SW, i.e. Linux.
If you get some funding, and it's only like 1 ad/month, go for it. I know how to hit "delete".

I agree with Steve also. I did notice the email from HP but if Meetup gets funding from that to host future meetings, I don't mind that I have to hit the delete button.

I didn't even notice the email from H-P. If the Santa Cruz New Tech Meetup gets a cool presentation or a few bucks for pizza, and the price I have to pay is the couple of tenths of a second it takes me to click past an unwanted email, I'm happy.

Bottom line: I'm fine with whatever decision the volunteers who have stepped up to run our Meetup make.

Thank you for the hard work!
