TEMESCAL CANYON WATERFALLS / KINDA EASY 5 MILE HIKE / REEL INN FOR FOOD

  • December 22, 2013 · 11:00 AM
  • Temescal Canyon

- 5 mile hike

- 950 ft Elevation Gain

- Park Fee  ( can't remember exactly... $5 - $7 )

EASY hike with a waterfalls*, views of the ocean and some easy rock climbing!!

TRIED TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN AT "TASTE" restaurant... but... lets face it... WE'RE a BIG GROUP!!

On my 4th phone-call to them I learned that for large groups they require FIXED menus, in which I'd have to select one of several menus, PLUS agree on a "beverage plan" / pricing plan / appetizers etc etc...

It's kinda like planning a wedding...!?!?!

Soooo..... to make things easier for myself and everyone... the "official" post-hike-lunch will be at REEL INN where ya just go and eat...  Thanx!!

* Waterfalls is sometimes underwhelming

From California Incline / PCH go 3 miles NORTH on PCH

Turn RIGHT on Temescal Canyon Road

Travel 1 mile to entrance at the corner of Temescal and Sunset Drive

MEETING place; SECOND parking lot; 1/4 mile into the park; near Ranger Station and rest rooms

Thanks John for today, it was a glorious day with bunch of great people. Unfortunately I could not make it to the Reel Inn, and didn't get to give you a Christmas hug either...so here it is! Merry Christmas!

Great! So many people, it almost looked like a mass migration.

Beautiful, but a little more strenuous than I expected.

Wow, almost 100 sign ups, John can really attract a crowd. Sorry I can't join y'all as I'm visiting family in Atlanta. No doubt, it would be a challenge to bring enough tangerines for all of you, I'd have to switch to kumquats. If memory serves me correct, the Hari Krishna temple serves free vegetarian meals on Sundays, don't be surprised if John changes the meal venue. ;-)

    • Michela

Hi Eric - unfortunately the Hare Krishna temple (if you're referring to Govinda's) serves free dinners on Sundays, not lunches :)

Shucks, I know that so many in the group were looking forward to the chanting and dancing that follows the meal. http://m.youtube.com/...

DIRE WARNING: OBEY THE TWO STOP SIGNS INSIDE THE PARK
The fine is $100 bucks. True!
Rising to $150 if you don't pay on time. You know nothing about it till you get a letter about a month later, with a link to a video of your car rolling nonchalantly through the sign.
This one one of the locations where diabolical stop sign TRAPS with video cameras are in place. Franklin Canyon is another, top of Reseda Avenue another. [Here's a map:
    http://www.highwayrobbery.net/TrcImgsMRCAlocs2012MarLaWeekly.jpg
I have shelled out $400 in these fines ($300 in one single trip to Franklin). The signs are often in places you are not expecting a sign and they are there basically to collect money from people like us.
Some websites say these stop traps are illegal and not to pay the fines - but it's best to not get the tickets in the first place.

I get lost easily in LA, can I call one of the organizers in case I get lost? If so, what's the best number? Alternatively, if anyone is leaving from Westwood or if Westwood is on the way for you, I would love to car pool. Thanks for everyone's input in advance!

Thanks for everyone's valuable inputs! Yue-Ming, I just text you, it would be great if you could let me know if you could pick me up on your way to the hike, many thanks!

FOOD AFTERWARDS AT EITHER REEL INN or TASTE - VOTE for one:

"Taste" is closer, just down Sunset Blvd

    December 17, 2013

    • Joe

      Never been to Taste so...Taste

      December 19, 2013

    • ! That JOHN G.

well... TASTE leads slightly in votes over Reel Inn... but I was just informed on my 4th phone call with them that for a large group (over 9 people) they require a "fixed menu" with pricing options, I have to decide between 4 fixed menus and "drink plans"... it's kinda like planning a wedding...

SOOOO..... REEL INN makes things very simple cuz we just walk in and eat...

Hello Everyone. My fiancé and I just moved to the Santa Monica/Venice area, Rose Avenue. I was wondering if anyone on here might be going to the hike on Sunday from this area and able to give us a ride there - we just arrived so are sans car for now, and the bus option doesn't look very appealing! Anyway hello all!!

    December 20, 2013

    • Nuala K.

HI Stacy! I sent you an email on here - that's fantastic, thanks!

      December 21, 2013

    • Stacy

Got it. Will pick you guys up at 10.30am.

      December 21, 2013

  • Randy

Paul is 100% correct on the stop sign thing. If I were you guys. I would park on Temescal before you cross sunset blvd to go into the park and walk.

  • Daniela W.

    Hi everyone,
do regular running shoes work for this hike? Or do I need hiking boots?

    December 20, 2013

    • Michela

I've done this hike with regular running shoes

      1 · December 20, 2013

The trail to Skull rock is in great shape and easily navigable, I use trail runners for this one.

      2 · December 21, 2013

  • J

Aw, man, would love to join. Going out of town to see family Sunday. Have fun!

    December 20, 2013

  • Larry T

Is this the Skull Rock hike?

    December 18, 2013

  • sondra

@Larry T yes I frequently park along Temescal across from Sunset for free to go to the beach. @everyone else, would love to try Taste never been there. Wasn't that impressed with REEL In last time I was threre.

    December 19, 2013

  • Stacy

    Sometimes underwhelming??

Taste is great but a friend of mine works for them and says it would be tough for a large group unless a definite reservation was made. (I have been trying to get her to come on one of John's hikes.)

    1 · December 17, 2013

    • ! That JOHN G.

I called them... they said 25 people would be fine with 1 day advance notice... how did you like the place??

      December 17, 2013

    • Stacy

The food and drinks were good. A little pricey at dinner. Will they be offering the lunch or happy hour (3-6pm daily) menu? My vote is for Taste.

      December 19, 2013

  • Larry T

Plenty of free parking along the road.

    1 · December 18, 2013

  • Kim C

Have a great hike! I'll be out of town until 2014. :)
    See you all again then!

    2 · December 17, 2013

  • Jen X.

Wish I can come but doing the Skid Row thing the night before...going to need some sleep on Sunday. Have fun and Happy holidays to you all.
