This hike starts from Cobb Estate gate at the end of Lake Ave. in Altadena, via the Lower Sam Merrill trail to Echo Mountain elevation 3,200' (2.6 miles), then takes the quiet Castle Canyon trail (2.0 miles) to Inspiration Point elevation 4,714' for lunch and photos. You can see ships in the ocean off Malibu on a clear day.

On the way down we take the Middle Sam Merrill trail (2.7 miles) and back to Lower Sam Merrill trail (2.6).

This mountain has an interesting history and you will see parts of it still remaining from the 19th century.

There are no restrooms at this trailhead. There are businesses along Lake Ave. that you can visit before reaching Cobb Estate, for example, fast food restaurants.

No plus ones (everyone has to be a member of Club) and no dogs, cats or birds.

Distance: 10 miles approx.

Elevation Gain: 3,000 ft approx.

Hike Time: 5 1/2 hours including breaks approx.

Difficulty: We will take a relaxed pace, but this is not a beginner's hike.

Trail Condition: OK, but a few difficult spots

Hike Type: In and back with a small loop

Bring: 2-3 liters of water, snacks, lunch, boots, hiking poles if you use them.

Check weather and dress in layers.

You should always carry your ten essentials:

Heavy rain or fire cancels.

Getting to the Trailhead:
From the I-210 Foothill Freeway in Pasadena, exit at Lake Avenue. Drive north for 3.4 miles to the end of Lake Avenue (where it intersects with the terminus of Loma Alta Drive running east and west). Park along the street, read signs. The hike begins to the right of the stone gateway on the east side of the street.
