RUSTIC CANYON 5 MILE HIKE - OPTIONAL LUNCH AT REEL INN / HANG ON DA BEACH AFTER

  • Apr 29, 2012 · 11:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

HERES AN EASY AND SCENIC 5 MILE HIKE... It crosses a scout camp and a couple interesting OLD buildings with an interesting history

CLICK HERE FOR INTERACTIVE MAP OF PARKING AND HIKE

PARKING is at Will Rodgers State Park... there is also a SMALL overflow parking just outside the park (see map above)

Overflow parking outside the park is VERY limited... so expect to park IN the park... it's $12 now (we're helping keep our State Parks open!!!)

The rains wore away part of the trail, and the brush is somewhat overgrown in places. It's VERY do-able, and actually MORE SCENIC than I remember (see photos / link below) but I'd have to give it a semi-easy / ranging to moderate and slightly difficult in a couple places rating (hows THAT for semi-vague)

Thanks for organizing. Enjoyed the first half of the hike, but do wish it had been billed more appropriately. If there's lots of stream jumping and poison oak, I always appreciate a heads-up. There were a large number of people who wore short pants and short sleeves. Worried about them.

It was OK for the hike. It was interesting and very varied. What i did not like was lots of jumping back and forth from one side of the spring to the other in the second part of the hike, slippery therefore dangerous and an ankle twister for the first time in all the hikes I've done. I only wished it had been written in the description. Thanks for asking.

Now I know why they shot scenes from the movie PREDATOR along the "stream" section of the trail in the Canyon of Death. :)

The group leader set an unrealistic pace, which not all of us could follow. He called it "slow", but that was probably according to his standards. He could have at least split the group by speed abilities, or wait from time to time for the group to form again. I ended up hiking on my own, asking people who were going both ways for directions, and ultimately created a new, personal hike experience for myself - hence the three stars - I've earned them.

Unfortunately I can't quite given this one a full 5 stars, although John never ceases to entertain with interesting and less traveled routes. After fording the stream for the 19th time (really!) or almost fording it, I came back significantly morewet, bruised, and scraped than usual after sliding down an embankment. Although usually there are plenty of helpig hands, most of the group was way ahead and there was little assistance when I needed it. After stopping to take one too many pictures (although that pink salamander was really cute!) I could neither see nor hear the group through the thick brush and had no idea where they were or even to which side of the river they headed. After a slight panic the last of us finally cought sight of the group and we made it back safely- but I think there should have been some more helping hands for the many challenging sections.

PERFECT DAY for a trek thru the Costa Rican rainforest!!! Congratulations on those who made it out of the JUNGLE in one piece... it was a bit trickier because of the recent rains, thusly making it better "water-cooler talk" on Monday morning... and an accomplishment you can all be proud of.

WoW, Costa Rica hike was great. Walking through the rain forest was an amazing experience. I wish I can sit there in the middle of the forest for sometime. Enjoyed a lot. Good work out before the Havasupai hike. Thanks a lot JOHN for taking us to Costa Rica on your birthday. It was a good treat for us...............

@John Which trail are you taking? The brochure here http://www.parks.ca.gov/MediaGallery/?page_id=626&m=brochures says Dogs must remain on a six-foot maximum leash at all times and are allowed only on the Inspiration Loop Trail.

@Eunice. Dogs are allowed in the park and short PARTs of the trails. There are signs where they are not longer allowed to continue.

it's a State park, so my belief is, dogs aren't allowed on the trail :-(
