It was a great hike, beautiful steep pine forest and multi-colored rocks, nice company as usual. Like many, I got held up by the bike crash for about 25 minutes.
A cope drove past the line shouting "It'll be at least an hour" and most people in line turned around. I waited and see'd, and ten minutes later they let us go. Thanks again John.

Really enjoyed hiking with lot of nice people.... Great view from the top. Lemon throwing was lot fun.... Enjoyed the scary and thrilling ride after the hike. Sun set was very cool. Night sky with the beautiful stars and planets was amazing. Saw few shooting stars and space stations. Learned lot of new stars. Thanks you Steve for showing the Andrameda galaxy.... Thank you John for the wonderful hike and the whole event.

Awesome hike with some really cool people! The off-road excursion was a thrilling way to break in my new SUV :-) And the astronomy lesson afterwards was great too. Thanks John for organizing this! Oh and thanks for the coffee @ Newcomb's Ranch!

John, your interactive map of the Mt Islip hike seems to show us missing the summit, and heading down the very steep Western face into some rocky gullys - is that right or did your pen slip?

    August 23, 2012

    • ! That JOHN G.

Yes... I'll be leading the entire group into a rocky gully... (kidding) The trail on the interactive map is "approximately correct" and I promise not to lead anyone off a cliff or anything...

Any idea of the travel time to get there from Westside? This sounds great, I just have to be back by 7:30 for my Fantasy football draft, otherwise the dreaded auto draft will ensure that I get a kicker in the second round.

    • Eric B

Nah, I let Gern draft my Fantasy team for me last year. He confused with it with Quiddich and drafted Harry Potter as my Quarterback.

isn't noon a bit too hot?

    August 21, 2012

    • ! That JOHN G.

nope... supposed to be high of 73 on Sunday...

      http://www.weather.co...

Islip is higher than Mt Wilson... and @ 3 degrees lower per 1,000 ft in elevation; it should be perfect temperature-wise

Can you give an estimated elevation gain and the amount of time you expect the hike to take? Thanks.
