Bat Paddle - Congress St. in Austin

  • Aug 24, 2013 · 5:30 PM

Bring a picnic dinner and join us at 5:30 on the shores of Lady Bird Lake.  After dinner we will head over to Congress Street to watch the bats emerge from the bridge.

An update from Steve:  the 24th is the 9th annual Batfest on the Congress Ave Bridge.  4pm til midnight with 2 stages, 10 bands - so we will have music to watch by!  This is also full moon - or nearly - so should be a nice evening paddle  back to the landing.

Our meeting spot will be on the North shore of Lady Bird Lake, behind the Holiday Inn Austin - Town Lake at 5:30 pm.  The hotel is just West of I-35 (Cesar Chavez exit).  Use Google Maps and search for "20 North I H 35  Austin, TX 78701", or click here.

The road running behind the Holiday Inn is East Avenue. I will try and park close to the 'Holiday Inn Boat Ramp' on East Avenue.  Please get your directions before you head up.  If you call me for directions or to say you are running late I may be on the water, in the water, hiking, or eating dinner and not able to answer the phone. Look for a 'Nature Hounds' banner somewhere (on a table, chairs, tree ??) to find our spot

Depending on when you arrive folks may already be there, or we may be swimming, paddling, hiking before dinner.

After dinner we will head up to Congress Street, about 1 mile upstream from our meeting spot

 Anyone bringing a boat needs to have;
  - Boat, paddle, PFD
  - Lights for your boat (state law requires lights when it gets dark).  I normally take along a clip-on light and/or hang a flashlight(s) on or my boat.  Not only are lights required, they may prevent someone from paddling into you in the dark!
  - an anchor if you have one.  The lake is about 15-20 feet deep by the bridge.
  - dry clothes for the ride home

 Anyone bringing a dog
  - be certain you dog is comfortable around crowds!!
  - be sure to pick up after them!
  - have adequate food & water for them
  - keep them on a leash at all times

Common questions:
 Carpool:

Everyone is responsible for setting up their own carpool arrangements.

I will stop at the HEB on I-35 and 3009 (Natural Bridge Caverns) at 11:15 on the way up to Austin. Look for a silver Ford Ranger with a yellow kayak to the right of the gas pumps as you face HEB.

I suggest anyone else carpooling later meet at HEB around 4:15.  If you carpool with someone - stay with your driver!  There will be alot of people  so be certain to stick with your driver and/or have their cell phone number!

Bathrooms:

There are some public bathrooms scattered along the trails.  Some are also in the park just West of the I-35 bridge.  If you head up to Barton Springs there are bathrooms there. Most hotels have bathrooms in the lobby.  The Holiday Inn by our meeting spot has them.  You may want to use them before heading home.

When do the bats come out ?
The bats emerge when they want to, normally around Sunset.  The colony is fairly large, so they typically are still emerging after dark.  You can stick around as late as you want.  I will head back to San Antonio after watching the bats.

Parking:
Free parking along East Avenue, and also in the lot under the I-35 bridge a few hundred yards away.

I will probably be showing up early (about 2PM) to get some good parking so look for my Red Mazda 3 hatchback. Looking forward to some relaxation. MA

I just dropped this event from the other MeetUp groups I had invited. With Batfest going on it will be way too crowded for them up on the bridge. We have the perfect set up: dinner downstream, paddle up to the bridge, then paddle back under a nearly full moon with music! I could not have planned this better :-)

Tom, just saw that the 24th is the 9th annual Batfest on the Congress Ave Bridge. 4pm til midnight with 2 stages, 10 bands - so we will have music to watch by! That said - anyone not on a kayak may have crowds to deal with - Google Batfest for picture last year. This is also full moon - or nearly - so should be a nice evening paddle back to the landing.

The bats look cool, but I can't see very good at night to drive home, so I'm gonna back out.
