Castle Rock Climbing

For those of us staying in the south bay this weekend we'll do a meetup at Castle Rock State Park. There is top roping, bouldering and sport routes in the park. We can do a mix of all three if there is interest.

I've got a rope and enough gear to setup an anchor for it. Plus a crashpad for bouldering. If you have gear please let us know what you can bring so we'll know our people to gear ratio.

I don't know the park super well so I'm open to suggestions on where to climb. If you know specific routes let us know what type they are and the difficulty rating.

The weather looks decent at 70 degress on Sunday, though it can be cold on the hill as it's shady and the fog can roll in. So bring something warm just in case.

There is free parking on the road or you can pay to use the lot.

Here is a map from the State Park's site. I don't really think the marker they have is at the parking lot entrance though. Use the map to get the location where highway 9 and 35 meet.

Then go south east (left if coming from Saratoga) for about 2.5 miles. You'll see the signs and parking lot on the right.

Lets try and pick out a few climbing spots before hand so we can post them here. That way if people are late they'll have a chance of finding us. Otherwise it'll be pretty hard to walk around the park looking for us.

As always saftey is 100% your responsibility while out climbing. No one on the trip is a professional guide. If you are unsure about someone's anchoring setup ask them about it or get a second opinion. Remember you are putting your life on someone else's anchor each time you tie in.

    does anyone want to carpool?

I'm thinking we go the actual Castle Rock "Rock".
It's fairly easy to find so if people are running late they can still catch up with us. Plus it looks like there are a good amount of easier climbs that should fit most of the group. Also there are boulders right there and Magoo Boulders is a 2 min walk.

I have two walkie talkies I will bring. Jill you are welcome to use my extra harness and JJJ let's connect about carpooling. I have a climbing book for Castle Rock that I will bring. I like Underworld, Goat Rock, Waterfall is nice yet a little more difficult. There are even some great climbs near the bouldering area by Castle Rock. I have never climbed them before but it looked super fun.

Total guess: 9am should be fine to get a route or two at Goat Rock. It depends on weather, plus it's a holiday, so who knows? Anybody got walkies? We can send someone down to check it out.

Does anyone have any suggestions on an area of the park to climb? I've been to Magoo Boulders and Underworld.
    Bruce had suggested the Waterfall.
Dan, how early would we have to get there for Goat Rock? Is is worth getting an early start for?

Does anyone want to meet and carpool from Saratoga? We can meet at Safeway off of Saratoga/Sunnyvale Ave or from Starbucks in Saratoga at Hwy 9 & Saratoga/Sunnyvale Ave Call me[masked] as we can coordinate.

Ari - I think Carl is coming from Oakland/Berkeley area, he may be near you.

JJJ - Yes, like Dan said, there are many levels at Castle Rock. We can try and find routes for everyone. The more ropes we have the more variation we can get going. I usually park in the free spaces on the side of the road. (maybe this is why they are planning on closing the park in 2012. Sighhh)

Castle Rock's VERY accessible. There are routes from 5.6- as hard as you want. Parking's $5, but there's free parking right outside the park. The only downside is the most popular rock (Goat Rock) fills up pretty quick on the weekends.

Hi David, I've never climbed outdoors before/at Castle Rock. Does it cost money and do you have to be a certain level? I climb around[masked]a.
