July Scala Monthly Meetup

  1. Dependency Injection w/ Scala (Michal Bigos, 50 mins)
    • Covered DI frameworks from Java (Spring, Guice)
    • Some of Scala grown (Subcut)
    • And of course "Cake" in its whole glory
    • I'll show you how to use various DI solutions not only in standalone Scala app, but also with Play! framework project too.
  2. Concurrency on the JVM (Bernhard Huemer, 50 mins):
    - Common pitfalls and problems with Threads, JVM concurrency and background about the Java Memory Model, how locking works, etc.
    - Going from a threading model based (directly) on ThreadPools to one based on Akka by addressing contention issues along the way (or "why don't I just use thread pools?")

Changed my mind and now I do have time to prepare a presentation on concurrency on the JVM. Obviously it'll include some points that aren't specific to Scala (it's not the only JVM language) and some other points are not related to any language or platform at all (pure theory as to whether I should even bother adding more threads, cores, etc. - the mathematics behind gut feelings with regards to scalability :)). That's a working agenda though, not too sure if I'll have time to cover all of these points in one talk. :)

So we are about 2 weeks before our meeting and haven't entered any agenda yet. Anyone is interested in any talk? Please vote here . If nobody enter his/her own talk I'll study one of the topic from google moderator and give talk about that.
