Geek Night: When Worlds Collide

We've watched some REALLY terrible science fiction films lately, so let's give ourselves a break and watch...

When Worlds Collide (1951) 83 min.

As a new star and planet hurtle toward a doomed Earth, a small group of survivalists frantically work to complete the rocket which will take them to their new home.

One possible suggestion for a future movie: the original War of the Worlds (or are we looking for BAD sci-fi movies?)

Those are great... How about this for the summer line-up: Creature with the Atom Brain, Day of the Triffids, and War of the Worlds?

Do you ever wonder why the destruction of NYC is a visual theme that's repeated over and over within Science Fiction? Is it because SciFi writers hate NYC, or is it an easy way for movie producers to emotionally connect with a larger audience than if you showed the destruction of a place like Butte, Montana? I assume it's my first idea. :)

Heheh... My guess is that they use New York because it's a huge city which is easy for people around the world to identify with. I'd rather watch (insert monster) destroy Seattle. How fun would that be?!
