What about the Barnes and Noble on Hurstbourne, just down from Starbucks? Their Starbucks area is quite large and I go there to write sometimes. They're open until 10 on weekdays. I've seen other groups meet there for stuff. It would be free, it's close to our former meeting place, but it's not as private.
Other coffee shop options I can think of:
Day's Coffee on Bardstown. Very cool local place, good coffee at reasonable prices. Open until 10 on weekdays. They have two seating areas, one of which would work quite well for our needs, and plenty of power outlets. We'd probably have to work out an arrangement with them to rent the seating area on Wednesdays, but it's not a particularly busy night for them so I'd be willing to bet they would let us have
it for the same fee as the Starbucks room. It'd be semi-private (the counter and a wall separate the two seating areas), with probably no increase in price for use, and closer to downtown/New Albany so people wouldn't have to drive as far to get there.
Vint on Frankfort. I've never actually been there so I don't know what the interior is like, but I know there's some kind of class that meets weekly for tastings or somesuch so I assume it's pretty group-friendly. They're open until 10.
Heine Bros has several locations that might work. Their Bardstown road location is open until 11 on Wednesdays so that's a plus! It is kind of small and they don't have a private meeting room, but there's plenty of room to drag tables together and I think they'd also be willing to come to some kind of deal for renting out part of the space once a month. The Frankfort ave. location is open until 10, but I've only been in
there once and I can't for the life of me remember the layout right now.
Other non-coffee-shop options that spring to mind:
Ramsi's Cafe On the World. One of my favorite restaurants, you can get a TON of food here for cheap. We'd probably have to eat dinner here on meeting nights in lieu of paying to rent the space, but that shouldn't be a problem, like I said the serving sizes are huge, the prices are low, and the food is great. Two people could definitely split an entree and still have leftovers. Also they are really good at adjusting to special diet needs like gluten free, lactose free, vegetarian, etc. They have three separate indoor rooms, including one called "the library" that would suit our group size well, is somewhat separated from the other dining areas, and is nice and quiet. There's also an outdoor dining area. They're next door to both a Heine Bros and a Carmichael's, both of which are open
until 9, but the restaurant itself is open LATE, until 1 AM! Plus it's quite centrally located (except for me because I live on the edge of nowhere as far as this town's layout is concerned, but whatever). Also they renovated just a couple years ago, so we wouldn't have to worry about getting displaced by construction again. I'd guess that our arrangement with them would be some kind of standing monthly reservation for 10 people. The only wrinkle I can think of is we might have to start requiring RSVPs every month, since restaurants usually like to know exactly how many people to set up for, but that shouldn't be too hard.
Actually now that I think about it, I totally vote for this one. 7 PM is my dinnertime anyway!
As the member who seems to have the most free time and also a car, I will totally go check out places/talk to the appropriate people to see about reserving space. I'd like to suggest that we
narrow it down to, say, five options by this Sunday, and then on Monday I will make calls/visit places during the day and e-mail everyone the results of my investigations. Ultimate authority on the final decision can go to Lizard. Does this Wednesday (the 28th) sound like a reasonable goal to have everything locked down? That gives whatever venue we decide to move to a solid week's notice.
Hope these suggestions help!

Subject: [scifiwriting-1] WE NEED A MEETING PLACE
ATTENTION!!! We need a meeting space for April and onward. Starbucks is closing to remodel and will eliminate the conference rooms. Wicks Pizza has rooms but on Wed nights has a DJ and band and it is LOUD. Please send suggestions.
