Navigation Course to Bronze NNAS level

General:  This is the first day of a 2 day navigation course for beginners, the aim of which is to help participants gain confidence in the hills.  We will be following the NNAS Bronze level syllabus, which is covered over 2 days (2nd day to be arranged).  This is a free course suitable for beginners, with minimal or no navigation experience, however before signing up, please ensure you are fit enough to spend 6 hours on the hills.  You will also require a map (Explorer 344 - Pentland Hills), a map case and a quality compass (Silva type 4 recommended).

Route: We will navigate around the Hillend area of the Pentlands.

Distance: Up to 10k

Suitability: Please do not deprive someone else of this opportunity unless you are prepared to spend 6 hours navigating out on the hills and are committed to attending a second day's training (mutual date to be agreed at the end of the first session). Unfortunately there will be no opportunity to complete the second days training at a later time if you are unable to attend on the agreed date, so please bear this in mind before signing up.

Please read our Participation Statement

Please remember that you are responsible for deciding if this course is suitable for you, coming adequately prepared and looking after yourself on the day. If we think the course  is not suitable for you or you do not seem to have the right equipment, we reserve the right to refuse to let you join, for your's and the group's safety and comfort.

Please indicate on your RSVP if you are able to give or need a lift.

If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch.

From turning up knowing nothing about navigation to feeling chuffed in what i learned. Thanks Gordon you certainly have the gift of putting people at ease & the patience for teaching navigation, I'll be practising to be ready for day 2

Thank you very much Gordon for the excellent instruction today. Your passion for navigation really shows in your enthusiasm to teach others and share your knowledge. Really do feel I've taken a lot away from today and look forward to getting some practise in ahead of day 2.
Thanks also to Dave for the lift and everyone for the good company. The sunshine was an added bonus!

Very informative. Navigation is not easy to teach and Gordon did a very good job today as I have come home feeling I know so much more now and have begun to understand it. Thank you. I will wait for day 2 eagerly.

Really good instruction today Gordon I now know why the magnification is for in the compass , never used it that often before, and it was satisfying that the pacing steps actually works thanks Gordon for the practical instruction plus arranging the good weather
