Meall nan Tarmachan Ridge

  • September 29, 2013 · 9:30 AM

Please read ALL the details below

Meall nan Tarmachan is one of the easier Munros to reach in good weather thanks to a high level start point, but it is really just the start of a rocky ridge traverse which is one of the most interesting in the Southern Highlands. There is a short scramble involved in the descent of the pointed top of Meall Garbh. Walkhighlands

Summary

Start: 09:30. Meetup Location: Parking area north of lochan grid ref NN583417

Grade (see explanation): Moderate. Distance: 12 Km. Ascent: 990 m. Duration: 5-6 hrs walking. This does not include time for breaks

Safety

Please read our Participation Statement

You are responsible for your own actions. We will walk as a group and not leave people behind. If you leave the group, you do so at your own risk. Safety is for the group, we may refuse to accept someone without appropriate clothing or equipment

Clothing and Equipment

A recommended gear list can be found on the MCofS website

The weather and temperatures in the hills can be much colder with stronger winds than in town

Waterproof jacket, warm fleece, waterproof trousers; hat and gloves and spares in case it is wet and we have a prolonged stop. Trainers aren't suitable as they don't offer any grip on slopes

Directions

Drive through Killin and continue on A827. Look out for sign to 'Bridge of Balgie / Ben Lawers' pointing left. There's a larger sign at the junction. Drive up past the large dam and to the far end of the lochan. Continue along the road for another mile to the parking area on the left, it has a hut just before it on the right (you will have passed a hut on your left)

Weather Forecast

Please make sure you check the weather forecast before you come: Met Office

Lifts

Please state if you can offer lifts or need one and where from

Lifts from Glasgow are normally from the Botanic Gardens (corner of Great Western Road and Queen Margaret Drive)

RSVP'ing

Yes: You intend to come and will turn up

No longer able to come: Please change to No so the group does not wait for you at the start and others can attend

Ignore my last question, just realised there was a web link through the grid ref

    September 24, 2013

    • Stuart

Valid question. I use the WalkHighlands link for background info and normally mention if we're not doing the same route

I am definitely driving from Edinburgh so am happy to offer lifts to anyone that needs. The only thing is that I need to shoot off quite quickly after the walk so as long as that is ok for people.

    September 11, 2013

    • Kerry N.

No problem, we can organise pick up arrangements nearer the time.

      September 13, 2013

    • Kerry N.

Hi. Are you still after a lift this Sunday? The drive should take 2.5 hrs so would need to pick you up at 7am at the latest depending on meeting point - whereabouts are you? Kerry

      September 24, 2013

  • Kerry N.

Just a rather silly question but I assume we are not doing the same route as walkhighlands as this route appears to have a different starting location.

  • Paula M.

I'll have to give this one a miss, as I've no way of getting there other than a lift from Glasgow.

Any chance of a lift from someone driving from Glasgow? I'll be staying in the youth hostel in the West End, but can get to anywhere central-ish. Will obviously share fuel costs!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
