Navigation Course to Bronze NNAS level

General:  This is the first day of a 2 day navigation course for beginners, the aim of which is to help participants gain confidence in the hills.  We will be following the NNAS Bronze level syllabus, which is covered over 2 days (2nd day to be arranged).  This is a free course suitable for beginners, with minimal or no navigation experience, however before signing up, please ensure you are fit enough to spend 6 hours on the hills.  You will also require a map (Explorer 344 - Pentland Hills), a map case and a quality compass (Silva type 4 recommended).

Route: We will navigate around the Hillend area of the Pentlands.

Distance: Up to 10k

Suitability: Please do not deprive someone else of this opportunity unless you are prepared to spend 6 hours navigating out on the hills and are committed to attending a second day's training (mutual date to be agreed at the end of the first session). Unfortunately there will be no opportunity to complete the second days training at a later time if you are unable to attend on the agreed date, so please bear this in mind before signing up.

Please read our Participation Statement

Please remember that you are responsible for deciding if this course is suitable for you, coming adequately prepared and looking after yourself on the day. If we think the course  is not suitable for you or you do not seem to have the right equipment, we reserve the right to refuse to let you join, for your's and the group's safety and comfort.

Please indicate on your RSVP if you are able to give or need a lift.

If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch.

Thanks for a great day in the Pentlands which I have never been to before. Beautiful views. I really enjoyed the course & looking forward to day 2. Thanks to Gordon & Stewart for sharing their knowledge & skills, and of course patience. Looking forward to putting it all into practice.

Great course that focused not just on passing on knowledge but ensuring a pace and practical work that confirmed and allowed understanding. Looking forward to the second day.

    Hi folks,
The weather is looking good for Sunday so the course will be going ahead as planned. There's quite a lot of stopping and starting so please make sure you've got warm gear. Will meet you all in the bottom car park (first right past the Steading pub) just before 10. My mobile number is[masked] 732. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Are any of the new folks on the course coming by car and perhaps via Stirling? A lift would be much appreciated (way easier than the bus!) and I'd be happy to share fuel costs.

Sorry my cold doesn't seem to be getting any better so I don't know if I will be fit enough to take part on Sunday. Best to give someone else the opportunity and hopefully I'll be fighting fight for when it's next scheduled. Have a good day.

Hi - I'm still planning on coming but I can't offer a lift unfortunately, I'm taking the bus.

That's good Cat, hopefully you'll get a place. Unfortunately NNAS rules only allow a maximum 6 students per instructor, which is why it's important that anyone who can no longer make it updates their RSVP in plenty of time.

Hi Gordon, I'm on the waitlist for this, and I would be happy to offer a lift to folk. I would drive from Glasgow and happy to pick up people anywhere in the city. I can comfortably fit 3 in my car.
