Dougie Connor memorial walk - The Cobbler

This walk is a memorial walk to Dougie Connor, who had a fatal accident in the hills in early June 2012. The photo above was taken by one of his fellow SHAG walkers the week before he died.

Dougie was a keen walker and walked with many different groups from in and around Glasgow, clocking up many hours, munros and experience in the hills and mountains of Scotland over the years. He was genuine, passionate and volunteered to help out on the walks he was on - as backmarker, front marker or just encourager to new and regular walkers whom he met. I know that many of the organisers in the group were delighted to have Dougie along on a walk.

A variety of members have met Dougie once or more frequently over the years and we wanted to give those people the opportunity to remember him as he would have wanted - out in the hills, smiling and chatting to all the different people that came along. The Cobbler was chosen because it is where Dougie volunteered to help out on a beginners walk in the early days of this group and we feel that this walk is a fitting tribute to a life well lived but ultimately cut short.

We will be tackling this walk at a slow pace to enable different abilities to take part and will be going up and down the last bit via the staircase at the back. If you have not done this walk before, please see the walkhighlands description for more information.

This walk is aimed at those members who knew Dougie or beginners who would like to go up a reasonable sized hill with people who will go at a slower pace.

We will also be collecting a voluntary £5 donation per head which will be given to the Oban Mountain Rescue Team who brought Dougie off the hill.

  • Distance: 6.75 miles
  • Ascent: 920 metres
  • Time: 4 - 6 hours
  • Starting Point: Succoth car park, Arrochar at 10am

Great walk and it felt like a fitting tribute to Dougie as some of us shared memories about him as we walked. Good mixed group - I like the fact that some beginners came along and had a shot at a bigger mountain. Thanks to all the organisers who came and everyone else for making this a lovely day :-)

Weather was a mixed bag but it was great to get some new folk out in the hills as well as more experienced folk. We raised £144 and some change for Oban Mountain Rescue Team. Dougie would have been proud of us

As I recall the council is still extorting money from us to park at Succoth. Remember to bring some £1 coins for the machine.
Looks like it will be breezy ! Think I'll leave my wig at home.

Hello, this will be my first outing with the group. Is this the place to ask for rides? If so, I'm looking for a ride from Glasgow, West End ideally, although I can meet you wherever's convenient. Thanks

I did some great walks Dougie, he was a lovely down to earth guy. I will contribute to the MRT, but unfortunately I will be away that week. If I wasn't I would be there, take care and enjoy the views for Dougie.
