Beginner spots - (Monday) Autobelay Climbing at Climbzone (Braehead)

This meeting runs concurrently with the full meetup for regular climbers at Braehead  - see the calendar for corresponding Autobelay Climbing at Climbzone (Braehead) meetup. The session runs from 7PM to 9PM.

Please meet at the entrance desk at 7PM - if you are running late say to the staff you are with the climbing group and are expecting to be signed in.

This meetup is open to complete beginners or novices to try climbing.

At Braehead the climbing is done via auto-belays (metal ropes) which automatically lower you to the ground, allowing you to climb safely on your own alongside other more experienced members of the group. You will be signed into the climbing centre, get some climbing shoes and shown how to put on your harness, clip onto the rope and how to climb and lower yourself.

At Braehead equipment hire is free so you only need the entrance fee (£7). It's recommended that you bring a water bottle as it can be strenuous.

Numbers are restricted and managed automatically through the waiting list on the site - first come first served. Please only RSVP if you are intending to come. If you change your mind please say so to allow someone else to have a shot - if you are at the top of the waiting list please check close to the event time to see if there is a late drop out. If you have been a previous week as a beginner please give others a chance to try climbing, however if there are no takers after a few days then please feel free to come back, alternatively see the options below for further climbing. If you have significant 'no shows' in the past or there is doubt about your attendance you may be removed from the event or waiting list.

Note that once you have been on this meetup you have a couple of choices if you want to climb further:-

  • If you can demonstrate putting on a harness and clipping in safely (which you will have done at this meetup) you can join Braehead only and start coming with the regular group for the Monday sessions at Braehead.
  • If you want to pursue climbing with ropes "top roping" as well you can either wait for the next club beginners session at Ibrox, then do the Ibrox beginners climbing course, or just go straight to do the course at Glasgow Climbing Centre (GCC). After doing this you will be able to climb at either of Braehead or Ibrox.

My first time climbing and it was good fun. And my arms have just about stopped aching!

Hi Alastair, I'm still planning to come along, now on Monday - so haven't changed my RSVP!
