We're a small, silly, smart, friendly, and festive group that meets every Thursday at 7 pm at the Palo Alto Café, 2675 Middlefield Road, between the Oregon Expressway and Colorado Avenue.
At that hour, the café is pretty quiet; the staff's friendly; our gathering ain't big. You can spot us if you look around for the Scrabble boards. I would say that most people would say we're a group that gets more fun out of socializing while we play than we do out of playing like man-eating sharks to beat the pants off each other, metaphorically speaking.
We're especially glad to have new members or potential members or even one-timers or casual thrill-seekers drop by; and we like building great words while we discuss, oh, dunno, line-dancing, labradors, home-remodeling, books, movies, misbehaving significant others, and our stints in prison. We're not at all savagely, Scrabbly competitive. In fact, we use "cheat sheets," dictionaries, allow people to undo and redo "challenges," and generally smile on all kinds of malfeasance. In fact, our entire group was once arrested by the Palo Alto police for disorderly conduct.
Oh, and the café has yummy hot and cold drinks, and hearty sandwiches. The café is on the north (SF Bay) side of the street, in a small shopping complex. It's essentially right across Middlefield from Mike's, a wonderful restaurant. (Beware: this is not the Mike's in Menlo Park; it's the Mike's in Palo Alto.) And if you'll just slip me $2/month, I can pay the Meetup rent.
