Moving The Action Forward, Writing Action, Script Reading

Please note that weather permitting we are planning to meet at Waterfront Park at the end of Prince Street.  Please bring your own lawn chair or blanket.  A Firehook and Starbucks are within 1/2 block from the park if you wish to stop first.  In the event of rain, we will meet at LPQ on King Street as usual.

We will discuss Half Coin, an original screenplay by one of our Members and read aloud the first 12 pages.  We will also be discussing how to write compelling scene and character descriptions (character first appearance) and share examples of compelling action scenes.

Let's discuss how action propels the story forward.  Did it make you want more?  Why?

Anyone with a Logline or idea they want to share is welcome to do so.

How can you use what you heard to strengthen your action scenes?

So I looked up the Screenwriting: Step-by-Step book Ashley brought to the Meetup on Amazon. $60 now! Must be filed under rare or limited availability.

Nice! Thanks! But I did find a used copy for $25 via a used bookseller and ordered it. The $5 you paid was a steal! :-)

And I wouldn't want you to wreck the binding on your copy running it through a machine!

In order to better facilitate event communications (like last Saturday's flood/no-flood decision). I (Brian for starters) will send updates via the @swemeetup Twitter account.

I should clarify that I will use the Twitter account *in addition* to using the comments for the individual meet-up. I also monitor the [masked] email address.

The table reading was really helpful. Let's do that again some time.

Great meetup everyone! A little chilly and the water creeping over the bank was ... interesting. But it was a great day and we could hear everyone loud and clearly! Welcome to the new folks who showed up today! You can check the Pages section for some great resources including books, podcasts, and other meet-ups. We talked a bit about script trailers today and recommend the DC Filmmakers meet-up to find folks interested in working on short projects like this. They are a great community of filmmakers. The ScriptNotes podcast and johnaugust.com as well as screenwriting.io (companion to John August's site) for questions and answers about screenwriting. And big thanks to Ernie for sharing his work today and letting us use it for the foundation of our discussion! I look forward to seeing everyone next month when we discuss writing comedy!

If the water engulfed us we might have had the inspiration for a group script development :) Thanks again

The park is actually in great shape! Going to grab a coffee and my chair and will be back here around 9am-ish.

I just saw these pictures of Old Town Alexandria: http://redbricktown.com/2014/05... If this is still flooded and muddy tomorrow, then we will revert to the upstairs at Le Pain Quotidien at 700 King St. I will attempt to get down there early, ascertain the situation and attempt to notify everyone of the status. I am also asking a few people I know down there if it has subsided. High tide was tonight shortly after 8pm!

are we still meeting at the park?

Yes. The park is actually in great shape. Just got down here and walking around it now.

I have been trying to read the 'The Half Coin' but u don't know where to read it. Do I have to submit my email?

    • Ashley W.

Where does one park over there?

      May 16

    • Brian M.

Yep, I plan to have just my laptop. There are a number of public lots and street side parking. Some of it is free, but there are a lot of meters. There are some muni lots that charge $4 for the day. I advise arriving a few minutes early to find parking if possible.

Hi all, this will be my first meet up and I am anxious to meet everyone and read this screenplay, however, I do not have a copy. Can someone forward it to me at the below address? I will try to make it by 9:30, but I live in Gainesville so hopefully my travels will be smooth.
I will look for the blue folding chair with footrest.

    Thanks!

Weather for tomorrow looks good! I have not been to this park before but will try to find a spot with half tree covered/sun. I will be the one with the blue camping chair with the foot rest.

Hi All, Actually I am now a maybe. My primary conflict for this week was just changed. I might have another, but I am not sure yet. In either case, I think that we are talking about Ernest's script--which I don't have. Ernest, can you send me a copy? Thanks! Jerry

    • Brian M.

Awesome! We plan to do a reading of the first 12 pages of "The Half Coin". I plan to print a couple extras for those whom I don't have e-mail addresses. But I expect everyone to bring a copy.

Newbie question: Do I need to read ALL of the screenplay in advance, or should I only read the 12 pages we will be reading aloud? I figured I'd ask publicly in case others didn't know, either.

    1 · May 15

    • Brian M.

I would say read as far as you can. I'm going to attempt to finish it all tonight. Ideally, it should read ~1 minute per page unless one stops to make notes.

Has anyone attended http://www.screenwritersworld.c... or plan on attending this year? I am curious to hear your thoughts.

    • Heather K.

I think Austin Film Festival is considered the best. This one seems very for-profit and heavy on "consultants." I'm thinking of going to Austin this year.

      May 15

    • Brian M.

That is what I thought. Every speaker on the list seems to be the author of a book or consulting service. Thanks for reminding me about Austin! I wanted to go to Austin last year, but failed to plan for it. I should be planning for that. Thanks!

I have been dying to get to this group. It looks like I finally don't have a conflict. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

    • Heather K.

Of course, now I have a conflict. But I think it means I can still come. I just might have to leave early. On a high, because I finished a draft today! I can almost taste the final draft now. Tastes like paper, but still...

      1 · May 13

    • Brian M.

That is awesome! Celebrate by coming to the meet up this Saturday so we can congratulate you in person!

Hi Guys. Sorry, but I am going to miss our next meeting. My wife is out of town and I am on kid-duty that morning--soccer games!! Have fun.

We will miss you. See you next time!
