Monterey shore or boat diving

Hey everyone. I've been a member of this group for a while but have never attended any meetups. I live in Aptos so I should be diving a lot more than I have been in the past. I'm PADI open water certified but I've only logged about 15 dives. I'm getting ready to take my Advanced Open Water - NAUI, next month so my nav skills will be better. In short, I want to dive and I'd love to meet some new people that also enjoy diving. If anyone would like to meet in Monterey in the future please get in touch with me and I'll see if I'm available.

Not a fancy rig at all. A vintage 2005 or 2006 Canon SD550 Powershot Digital Elph point and shooter, in a housing from Canon rated to 165 ft in depth. I pretty much shoot in Macro mode all the time though, with flash pretty much on every shot.

How was the dive? I saw some of the pics that were posted. Whoever took those has a nice rig. The pics have some vibrant colors.
I'm looking forward to the next event so I can hit the water!

Hey, I'm glad to join you. This will be my first time diving with a meetup group :)

I'll show up around 8AM. I don't mind going to Breakwater if the surf's up.

    Wish I could make it

Hi Russell i live in Soquel and am in similar situation. I'm interested in diving tomorrow but can not make it until later day, how late do you plan to stay? Anyone else interested in like a 10AM dive date?

    March 14, 2014

    • Stef F

You could join us on our second dive?

      March 14, 2014

Hi All, can not make AM dive this time, maybe next or i'll post some High-Noon dives soon. Have a great dive!

Both Bamboo Reef and Aquarius dive shops are open at 7 am in Monterey for those picking up tanks and/or gear. I will likely have 1st dive done by 10 am. To the group, I should be at Otter Cove by 7:30 am. If the surf is really bad I would like to advise everyone of such and that we may move to Inner Lover's Point or even to Breakwater. Right now the wave forecast models are not showing real high surf but until we get there cannot be sure. If you want to text me tomorrow morning do it to this number: [masked]-0930. Or call my cell phone at[masked]-8566. For those interested, particularly between dives, I will have my backpacker's stove so there be a pot of hot water available for anyone wanting coffee (Starbucks VIA, the medium roast), tea (herbals or caffeinated) or hot cocoa or hot cider. Also wine, cheese and nuts for end of diving day if anyone is interested in and they want to peruse any of my marine life ID books post dives.

All sounds muy bueno. I'll be wearing a purple shirt and my jewfro. I've been told I'm easy to spot. Carpooling with Peter T from SF.

      March 14, 2014

    • Peter T.

Agreed Russell- let's see what conditions are like. Swell models look ok, but not great either. I'm totally fine with Breakwater for some macro and testing out some gear. Saw three octos at 15 feet last time I was there!

      March 14, 2014

  • Peter T.

Hi Russell- Stef and I will be there by about 7:30 or 7:45. Thanks for the treats Russell- that is awesome ; ) Jeffrey- I'm probably more on Russell's schedule, first dive done by 10, second dive done probably by 1 or so, then I have to head back. You can definitely join for the second dive!

    March 14, 2014

  • David

Sorry all but I'm not going to make it tomorrow. I pulled a muscle and it's not going to be possible for me to carry my gear to and from the water.
Hope you all have fun. I will join you next time!

I'm coming from Oakland...any one else nearby game to carpool? If not, no biggie, I may just come up Fri pm.

    March 12, 2014

    • Stef F

I would need to pick up a vest, weights and tank when we get to Monterey. Would that be a problem for you?

      March 12, 2014

    • Peter T.

Not at all- I'll be getting my tanks at Aquarius Dive Shop, we can also stop at Bamboo Reef as well if necessary. I think we'll be doing two dives, and on the road back hopefully by 1 or 2.

      March 12, 2014

  • Russell H W.

yes you do have to be careful on those stairs. I almost did a face plant there the first time I was there, with full gear on.

    March 12, 2014

  • Russell H W.

Peter, thanks for posting the link for the map. I have dived this location several times. It is not an "Advanced divers only" site in my opinion, unless the surf is way up at that part of Monterey Bay. I think I have some photos from there posted on the Meetup Photos section but that was a couple years ago. I will post some again shortly. I will be driving a dark green Highlander Hybrid, with a DAN bumper sticker and a Cal Aggie ( Go Ags!) license plate frame. I am coming from Foster City and would be leaving there circa 6 am on Saturday morning.

    March 12, 2014

    • David

Agreed, this is not an advanced dive. The entry can be difficult though. Going up and down the stairs in full gear and then climbing over rocks to get to the water can be a challenge. Once you're in the water it's not difficult at all :)

      March 12, 2014

  • David

I'm coming down from Fremont if anyone wants to pool. I'll be making a stop at Bamboo Reef to get tanks before heading out to the cove.
This will be my first dive with this group. Will there be a way to identify us?

Hi there, Lobos would not be possible for any weekend this month, since it is full (they only let 15 or 20 dive teams), so Otter Cove would be fine. I've never dove at that particular site, so since we have some more novice divers, it would be good to have someone who is familiar with the site, if Russell can't make it- anyone?

    March 12, 2014

    • Stef F

Got it! Otter Cove it is.

    • Stef F

      :)

      March 12, 2014

  • Stef F

Let's decide between Peter or Russell's suggestions. Otter Cove vs. Pt Lobos. Meeting at 8am on Saturday, meeting place dependent upon what/where we chose as a group to go. I'd be happy diving either place and can be swayed as long as conditions seem bueno.

    March 12, 2014

    • Russell H W.

As Peter pointed out in his original posting, Point Lobos is full up on weekends as you need a permit and they have strict limits on number if divers allowed. He was looking for someone to do Point-lobos on a weekday next week as I understood his posting.

Saturday works for me. The parking at Otter's Cove can be difficult though. Especially if the weather is good. It might be a good idea for us to meet up somewhere else in Monterey and carpool to the cove.

    March 12, 2014

    • Russell H W.

Turns out my MD said I am ok to dive this weekend after all. I will likely be at Otter Cove by 7:30 am. I have always been able to find parking but I usually arrive early and typically am in the water by 8-8:30 myself.

      March 12, 2014

  • Russell H W.

I have to bow out as to this weekend (March 15th) unfortunately. At this time it looks like I can do March 22nd or 23rd

    March 12, 2014

    • Stef F

I'd be happy to go next weekend as well.

      March 12, 2014

  • Peter T.

I don't want to hijack this from the original poster : ) Perhaps they could chime in with if Saturday is viable- sounds like we have some takers!

    March 11, 2014

    • Stef F

      wait...aren't you the original poster?

      March 11, 2014

  • Nel

I'm not going to be able to make this weekend, but I'm open to future dates. Have fun!

    March 11, 2014

  • Russell H W.

I propose for those that can dive this Saturday, March 15th, to meet at 8:00 am to dive at Otter Cove, conditions permitting, otherwise mosey over to Breakwater.

    1 · March 11, 2014

  • Faine G.

I'm definitely interested! Not free this weekend, but next weekend might work...

    March 11, 2014

  • Russell H W.

I can dive either day this coming weekend.

    March 11, 2014

  • Stef F

I'd be down for a dive this Sat or next.

    March 10, 2014

  • Peter T.

Hey all, was just about to post some for a dive next week, perhaps Pt. Lobos? I have some near gear to test out before heading to the channel islands at the end of the month, so want to get in a few dives. Weekends are basically full at Lobos for the next month, so we could do a weekday dive next week if people are up for it. Tuesday are best for me, but I'm flexible. If weekends are better, I'm up for this Saturday the 15th- conditions permitting we could do a number of places in Monterey. Let me know what your schedule(s) looks like. Thanks! Peter
