Announcing a new Meetup for The Greater Bay Area Scuba Lovers Meetup!

What: Monastery South-Bring your Camera!

When: September 26,[masked]:00 AM

Monastery Beach South
Carmel River State Beach Highway One
Carmel, CA 93922

This is an intermediate to advanced dive depending on the wave conditions.

This beach is in Carmel and is called Monastery Beach because it sits below the Monastery. It is past Touristy Carmel-by -the-Sea and its proper name is Carmel River State Beach. There is parking along both sides of the road but be very careful because it is a fast part of Highway One. Go all the way down to the South End of the beach before you park. There is a pebbly/sand hill before you can see the ocean where we will be diving-we will meet just past that hill. There is a wonderful dive spot here perfect for taking pictures and I like to explore macrophotography in this spot. Be aware that this is a pebbly beach not sandy and you will end up with Monastery pebbles in every orafice when you are done!

Also be aware that this is a tempermental beach due to its unpredictibility in surge force and wave height. On a nice day though the only issues tend to be a rather steep entry and exit. You will get the opportunity to experience the "Monastery Crawl". I have had quite a bit of good experiences here and will do a thorough debriefing before we go in and come out-so dont think that this is an easy dive, it is not for the weak-of-heart beginner. Buddies are very important for assisting in the exit especially with the relatively fragile camera gear so dont leave the ocean without a pal and keep that camera out from under you (the resentful voice of pebble eating experience)!

If you havent been to Monastery this is a gentle introduction. I will give more info before we get wet. Don't be afraid of this beach, just remember that I am always going to be honest about where the problems may lie. this is one of the most stunning beaches in the area and I would love to introduce you to it if you havent seen it before. There are bathroom facilities and an abundance of poison oak leading to them.

Bring your cameras, tanks for two dives, food for me and an attitude for adventure and fun. Lets get some photos for the website!
