DigiGirlz NEEDS YOU to VOLUNTEER and help at-risk girls with the LEGO Mindstorms robotics day.
Details: DigiGirlz is a 3-day summer camp hosting 100 girls from San Diego. This year DigiGirlz is partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs recruiting girls from the more underserved communities. Volunteering provides great opportunity to really make a difference in the lives of these girls and their families.
The goal of the camp is to get them excited about pursuing careers in the areas of science, math, engineering, and technology – There are workshops in application development, web development, cybersecurity, internet safety, math, engineering of Kinect, and of course ROBOTICS using the LEGO Mindstroms kits so the girls can have fun programming and working with them.
The camp runs from August 15th – 17th, 2013 and is being held at Coleman University located at 8888 Balboa Avenue, San Diego, CA 92123.

Specifics about the Robotics Volunteer Role:
From Kimberly at Microsoft who is sponsoring the event: "I have an instructor who will teach the class, and he will chat with you prior to the event, but we really just need 1-2 more volunteers that are familiar with LEGO Mindstorms that can assist him because there will be 33 girls in each class, so you will just need to roam through the classroom helping the girls and answering their questions. The workshop is taught 3 times during the day, with each session being 90 minutes. We will have approximately 16 robots for the girls to use in groups of 2-3. The kit we are using is : http://www.legoeducation.us/eng/product/lego_mindstorms_education_nxt_base_set/2095 and they will be prebuilt into a rattlesnake design that jumps out and bites you when you walk in front of the sensor; and the girls will have windows PCs with the software installed so they can do the programming."
What you get: A PyLadies T-shirt, free lunch, and the satisfaction of knowing that you have been instrumental in bridging the gender gap in these fields.
