1st Sun. FUN RIDE for March -- SCOOT & FOOT II !

  • March 3 · 12:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

THE "RIDE OF SEVEN BRIDGES" rides again, this time in the afternoon! Central San Diego near Balboa Park is dotted with delightful little footbridges of wood, steel and concrete. They include old and modern, truss, arch, cantilever, even suspension bridges. We're going to ride to each (10.2 miles to the 7th bridge, 13.7 or 14.5 back to the start), discuss their history and (optionally) walk across all seven on our list. (Last time in 2011, one was closed because a tree had fallen on it; but it's been repaired.)

Meet 12:30, pre-ride talk 12:45, ride out at 1 PM. Speeds will be moderate, suitable for smelling flowers or watching scenery.  This ride is suitable for new riders and 50-cc scooters -- even strongly-ridden bicycles!  It's a perfect "first ride" for new scooterists. We'll end up back in Balboa Park around 3:30.

Check all your scooter's vitals (tires, brakes, oil, coolant, lights, etc.) and top off gas tank before the meetup. Carry snacks, water, extra clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, cell phone, etc. You may want to bring along a notebook to take notes at one of the bridges.  We strongly recommend sturdy shoes or boots and protective clothing.

Ride maps and/or turn lists will be provided. No scooter will be left behind, whether at hills (if any), stop signs or traffic lights; the "sweep" (last) rider will have radio to the leader.

This ride is an afternoon, non-picnic version of the Saturday event. You can do either one -- even both if you wish! (RSVP separately.)

You're already there. The home page address is www.meetup.com/sd-scooters. Or from this ride page, you can go up to the top and click “Home” at the left to get to the SDSS home page. Glad to have you with us Sunday!

Well organized and run. Appreciate the effort to make a printed map and make sure no one got left behind. I loved seeing and walking on the bridges and learning some basic history.

  • bauerbach

    EXcellent fun and educational!!

    March 4

  • Dave E

We had three "no-shows" but made up for it with four surprise nonmembers whom we met at the Dragon -- three people (Dominic, Don and Bianca) on two scooters, and Ken B. on a Harley. We welcome everyone...

    March 4

  • Dave E

Weather was perfect, riders too, but we couldn't avoid the highest concentration of stoplights and stop signs on any of our 35 rides led. We promise the next few rides will have far fewer of those obstacles!

    March 4

  • AVJ

Was very enjoyable. excited to do another one, possibly in the back country.

    • Dave E

Country picnic rides are frequent, usually monthly -- on the home page, scroll down through "Recent Meetups" and "See All Past Meetups" to see some we've done in the past. We repeat the good ones every year or so.

Dave Thank You for doing this Sunday ride. It was good seeing everyone.
I needed to make a pit stop, thought I would catch up with you guys but I couldn't find you. I had fun day, it was good to get out of the house.

Great seeing everyone. Enjoyed the ride, company and bridges.

Thank You so much, it was great to meet the group, loved the bridges, had a bit of trouble with all the stop/start motion but it was worth staying for. Will ride out with y'all again.

Waiting for the gang at Quince since I'm a few minutes late!

    March 3

  • Rachael Smithey

Up all night with a sick pup - we may be heading to the vet

    March 3

    • Dave E

If the puppy's better or if you end up leaving him with the vet, come along with us (it would make a pair, big and little Ruckuses.) We'll all root for the little one's health.

      March 3

  • Jeff

Dave, I may be late due to Realtors. If so, I will meet the group at the first bridge which I assume is 3rd and Quince?

    March 3

    • Dave E

Right, we're going to 3rd/Quince again because of better parking that side. After that, it's up and over to the Spruce St. suspension bridge. We probably won't even pause at the east end of the Quince bridge, just turn left there and go around and up to the Vermont bridge.

Can't wait for the ride today!

If it is more than a spritz or sprinkle, I would have to cancel, I do not enjoy riding in the rain and I don't like the way it makes my scooter behave either, let's hope it is very light.

    March 2

    • Miccilina Piraino

Dave, yeah, I know, I am a bit cautious when it comes to me and wet conditions, only been riding for a few months, so just hoping it is fairly dry tomorrow.

      March 2

    • Dave E

I just checked the latest forecast. NO rain. Cooler (69 degrees) and partly cloudy (they said PC for Saturday; look at the photos!) First predicted rain is scattered showers next Friday. I've been keeping track and have seen no forecast predicting rain tomorrow.

      1 · March 2

  • Taho-Hugh B.

Forcast maybe a little lite rain. 60% chance so they say. But then again, this is SD. No worries, wash & wear.

    March 2

    • Dave E

The latest forecast actually is for partly cloudy skies. The first rain prediction is not until next Friday (scattered showers only.)

      totally stoked!

  • Dave E

Because of the large attendance, we've changed the route to give better parking at our first stop and to go to a different bridge on the second stop. The changes will shorten the overall ride length, so we'll finish a bit sooner.

    February 28

  • Dave E

WEATHER: Scheduled to cool down to 68-69 degrees from Saturday's high near 80, but still mostly sunny. Dress accordingly, and bring an extra layer just in case. (Still superb riding weather.)

    February 27

  • Dave E

On the test-ride today we discovered that many of the roads we'll use will be closed Sunday morning for a running event. The closures and delays are supposed to end by noon, so we should be OK. (Played hob with the Saturday ride, though.)

    February 25

  • Dave E

Every person answering the RSVP questions said they'd want to walk across all the bridges or were OK with it, so we'll try to walk 'em all. Anyone not wanting to can just stay and "hold the horses" for 10 minutes or so!

    February 25

  • Maria Silveira

Thx Dave, I should be able to fine it now. Ciao!

    February 25

  • Maria Silveira

Hello fellow scooters!...I am looking to meet up with you guys and will be riding down from Carmel Valley. I am not sure I know where the "dragon" statue is located. Can someone please advise?

    February 24

    • Dave E

Go to 6th and Laurel at the west side of Balboa Park. Head east on Laurel (El Prado) across the Cabrillo Bridge over 163. Go under the arches to the open plaza (Plaza de Panama), then turn right (south) and look for a large statue of an armored man on horseback (El Cid.) Immediately west of that statue, at the southwest corner of the first parking lot, will be a rubberized dragon sculpture (and a bunch of scooters.) Email me with your address and I can send you turn-by-turn instructions. If you scroll down in "Past Meetups" to the 2011 bridge ride, there are photos of the dragon.

      February 24

    • Dave E

Above under the date, where it says "Plaza de Panama, Balboa Park," click on the word "map."

      February 24

  • Rachael Smithey

I now have every other Sunday off - looking forward to this ride!!

    February 19

  • Dave E

If you guys want to start an hour later (meet at 1, ride at 2, back by about 4:30) please let us know. Even with that starting time we should be finished before it gets cold.

    February 14

    • Miccilina Piraino

I like the start time as noon, but if the majority want 1 that is ok, I would just like to be home in Clairemont before it gets too dark. Either time is ok for that. And I do want to walk all the bridges, it will be a first for me, have not gone on any of them. Micci

      February 14

    • Dave E

In late August 2011 we met at 2 PM and rolled out at 2:15, but of course were blessed with longer daylight (26 days before the equinox, while this ride is 19 days the other way.) Still, 1 PM probably would work. We'll see what others say. Meanwhile I'll post a compromise.

      February 15

  • Dave E

NEW DATA for both the Saturday and Sunday rides now posted in the Discussions section. Click [Discussions / Scheduled Rides... / Scoot & Foot]. Among other good stuff, there's a short description of each bridge and its history.
