THE "RIDE OF SEVEN BRIDGES" rides again, this time in the afternoon! Central San Diego near Balboa Park is dotted with delightful little footbridges of wood, steel and concrete. They include old and modern, truss, arch, cantilever, even suspension bridges. We're going to ride to each (10.2 miles to the 7th bridge, 13.7 or 14.5 back to the start), discuss their history and (optionally) walk across all seven on our list. (Last time in 2011, one was closed because a tree had fallen on it; but it's been repaired.)
Meet 12:30, pre-ride talk 12:45, ride out at 1 PM. Speeds will be moderate, suitable for smelling flowers or watching scenery. This ride is suitable for new riders and 50-cc scooters -- even strongly-ridden bicycles! It's a perfect "first ride" for new scooterists. We'll end up back in Balboa Park around 3:30.
Check all your scooter's vitals (tires, brakes, oil, coolant, lights, etc.) and top off gas tank before the meetup. Carry snacks, water, extra clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, cell phone, etc. You may want to bring along a notebook to take notes at one of the bridges. We strongly recommend sturdy shoes or boots and protective clothing.
Ride maps and/or turn lists will be provided. No scooter will be left behind, whether at hills (if any), stop signs or traffic lights; the "sweep" (last) rider will have radio to the leader.
This ride is an afternoon, non-picnic version of the Saturday event. You can do either one -- even both if you wish! (RSVP separately.)

Well organized and run. Appreciate the effort to make a printed map and make sure no one got left behind. I loved seeing and walking on the bridges and learning some basic history.

We had three "no-shows" but made up for it with four surprise nonmembers whom we met at the Dragon -- three people (Dominic, Don and Bianca) on two scooters, and Ken B. on a Harley. We welcome everyone...

Weather was perfect, riders too, but we couldn't avoid the highest concentration of stoplights and stop signs on any of our 35 rides led. We promise the next few rides will have far fewer of those obstacles!

Dave Thank You for doing this Sunday ride. It was good seeing everyone.
I needed to make a pit stop, thought I would catch up with you guys but I couldn't find you. I had fun day, it was good to get out of the house.
March 3
Thank You so much, it was great to meet the group, loved the bridges, had a bit of trouble with all the stop/start motion but it was worth staying for. Will ride out with y'all again.
March 3
Dave, I may be late due to Realtors. If so, I will meet the group at the first bridge which I assume is 3rd and Quince?

If it is more than a spritz or sprinkle, I would have to cancel, I do not enjoy riding in the rain and I don't like the way it makes my scooter behave either, let's hope it is very light.
March 2
Forcast maybe a little lite rain. 60% chance so they say. But then again, this is SD. No worries, wash & wear.

Lots of photos recently uploaded, taken on the Saturday ride. Click "Home," scroll down to that ride and check 'em out!

Because of the large attendance, we've changed the route to give better parking at our first stop and to go to a different bridge on the second stop. The changes will shorten the overall ride length, so we'll finish a bit sooner.

WEATHER: Scheduled to cool down to 68-69 degrees from Saturday's high near 80, but still mostly sunny. Dress accordingly, and bring an extra layer just in case. (Still superb riding weather.)
February 27
On the test-ride today we discovered that many of the roads we'll use will be closed Sunday morning for a running event. The closures and delays are supposed to end by noon, so we should be OK. (Played hob with the Saturday ride, though.)
February 25
Every person answering the RSVP questions said they'd want to walk across all the bridges or were OK with it, so we'll try to walk 'em all. Anyone not wanting to can just stay and "hold the horses" for 10 minutes or so!

Hello fellow scooters!...I am looking to meet up with you guys and will be riding down from Carmel Valley. I am not sure I know where the "dragon" statue is located. Can someone please advise?
February 24
If you guys want to start an hour later (meet at 1, ride at 2, back by about 4:30) please let us know. Even with that starting time we should be finished before it gets cold.

NEW DATA for both the Saturday and Sunday rides now posted in the Discussions section. Click [Discussions / Scheduled Rides... / Scoot & Foot]. Among other good stuff, there's a short description of each bridge and its history.
