THIS RIDE HAS A HUGE VARIETY of roads and scenery. We ride along the Mission Bay shore, see the view from Mt. Soledad, go north past Torrey Pines and along the beach, swing inland and wind by lagoons, horse farms, golf courses, upscale mansions and tree-lined avenues. Back to the coast, we pass a couple of roundabouts and reach the giant Carlsbad power-plant chimney, then come back to picnic at large, free Poinsettia Park. From there we roll east and south on broad parkways and enjoy lovely Elfin Forest and Harmony Grove, bypass Escondido, cruise down through Del Dios Canyon past Lake Hodges, then after another jaunt along winding roads near Rancho Santa Fe we return south along Torrey Pines and Genesee to Mission Valley.
Meet 9 AM to meet and greet, pre-ride talk 9:45, ride out at 10. Speeds will be moderate, suitable for smelling flowers or watching scenery. Most rides are suitable for new riders.
Northerners can join the ride at Carmel Valley Market, Carmel Valley Road at Via Cortina; we should pass there between 11 and 11:15. (Let us know if you'll meet us there.)
It's about 46 miles to the picnic spot, 52 back to the start, for a total of 98 miles. Including planned stops for leg-stretching, scenic views, restrooms, lunch and gas, we should be back at the start between 2 and 3 PM.
Check all your scooter's vitals (tires, brakes, oil, coolant, lights, etc.) and top off gas tank before the meetup. Carry lunch, snacks, water, extra clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, cell phone, etc. We strongly recommend sturdy shoes or boots and protective clothing.
Ride maps and/or turn lists will be provided. No scooter will be left behind, whether at hills, stop signs or traffic lights; the "sweep" (last) rider will have radio to the leader.
(You picked a repeat of our favorite, the one AV wouldn't let us do.)
