1st Sat. Picnic Ride -- CHIM/ELFIN-SCOOT REDUX!

THIS RIDE HAS A HUGE VARIETY of roads and scenery. We ride along the Mission Bay shore, see the view from Mt. Soledad, go north past Torrey Pines and along the beach, swing inland and wind by lagoons, horse farms, golf courses, upscale mansions and tree-lined avenues.  Back to the coast, we pass a couple of roundabouts and reach the giant Carlsbad power-plant chimney, then come back to picnic at large, free Poinsettia Park.  From there we roll east and south on broad parkways and enjoy lovely Elfin Forest and Harmony Grove, bypass Escondido, cruise down through Del Dios Canyon past Lake Hodges, then after another jaunt along winding roads near Rancho Santa Fe we return south along Torrey Pines and Genesee to Mission Valley.

Meet 9 AM to meet and greet, pre-ride talk 9:45, ride out at 10.  Speeds will be moderate, suitable for smelling flowers or watching scenery.  Most rides are suitable for new riders.

Northerners can join the ride at Carmel Valley Market, Carmel Valley Road at Via Cortina; we should pass there between 11 and 11:15.  (Let us know if you'll meet us there.)

It's about 46 miles to the picnic spot, 52 back to the start, for a total of 98 miles. Including planned stops for leg-stretching, scenic views, restrooms, lunch and gas, we should be back at the start between 2 and 3 PM.

Check all your scooter's vitals (tires, brakes, oil, coolant, lights, etc.) and top off gas tank before the meetup.  Carry lunch, snacks, water, extra clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, cell phone, etc.  We strongly recommend sturdy shoes or boots and protective clothing.

Ride maps and/or turn lists will be provided.  No scooter will be left behind, whether at hills, stop signs or traffic lights; the "sweep" (last) rider will have radio to the leader.

(You picked a repeat of our favorite, the one AV wouldn't let us do.)

Always fun to have newcomers on our rides! I owe everyone an apology for missing four turns, though; I was having a really bad pain day with the hip, and couldn't take strong painkillers because I was riding. You probably thought it was only three, but the fourth missed the planned diversion on Orpheus up to Leucadia Blvd. to go past the two promised roundabouts. (Sorry; usually we don't get lost at all.)

Many thanks to Sheryl for riding sweep (drag) and to Wagehog in the rocking chair (check out his video.) They helped us keep everything together, even when we made mistakes.

I met the group at Carmel Valley Market, so I missed Dave E's introduction to the ride. Dave E did give me his write up "Along The Way" which I folded up and put away so that I could join the group to to the next stop.
Well this morning, Tuesday, I finally unfolded and read Dave E's narrative...Well Done! Very interesting, and lots of historical insights about the route.
These should be saved and posted on line.
Thank you, I really enjoyed your write up. Makes me want to do the ride all over again! :>)

    August 6, 2013

    • Dave E

Email me from your own address (Meetup can't handle attachments) and I'll send you the turns list so you can do it again yourself. There's also a "Glossary" of street names (mainly Spanish or pseudo-Spanish) we see along the way; I didn't print that one out for everyone. And, of course, the "Along The Way." I prepared all those when refining the ride for Amerivespa, but politics and selfishness prevented us from doing it then.

    Dave E,
I noticed your wife had cool San Diego Scooter Squadron patches on her jacket. Is there a place we can purchase those patches? I would like to place one on my MC jacket.

Perry has them. Private message him for more info.

David, you can do the next best thing! The "Ride For Kids" on September 22 covers much of the same ground, though we planned the Chim/ElfinScoot before knowing about the RFK. You (and anyone else) can get the entire ride route for any ride (turn-by-turn, with mileage) by sending me a message from your own Email address (Meetup can't handle attachments.) Anyone can get that "Along the Way" ride summary too, the same way. Both are Word files. I also can send the MS Streets & Trips .EST file; that's how I develop all of my rides, since it's much more versatile than Google Maps.

If you post the Google Maps route that we are taking tomorrow, then maybe we can breakup into smaller groups, allowing the more experienced riders to go a little faster, and giving the newer riders or riders on smaller scooters an opportunity to feel more comfortable about going their own pace, because they will be able to print out the map of where we will be tomorrow, and more confident about not getting lost...

    Just a suggestion...

    August 2, 2013

    • Dave E

I don't use Google, because MS Streets & Trips is much better for customizing both routes and display. Never fear, though. On past rides we've led (about 40) we've never had complaints from riders who wanted to roar through the ride too fast to see anything. (I usually hand out ride maps, but this time will hand out general summaries.) A detailed list of turns (in a Word file) also is available but you have to give me your Email address because Meetup can't handle attachments. We don't let anyone get lost; that's why we have a radio-equipped sweep rider. Extra radio riders in the middle are added frosting, not mandatory.

      1 · August 2, 2013

    • Dave E

You'll miss the pre-ride talk and the meet-and-greet, alas, but I'll save you a copy of the handout paperwork.

      1 · August 2, 2013

  • Dave E

With this many riders, we'd love it if one or two veterans with radios (FRS/GMRS channel 16) could ride in "rocking chair" positions (somewhere in the middle) and help Sheryl in the "back door" spot keep track of everyone. Let us know. If you have a radio and just want to eavesdrop, that's OK too; we have no secrets.

My wife is bringing the scooter but I hope to bring my CT90 (semi-scooter) is only 90cc and I know I'll struggle on the uphills ... Bog down to 10mph w/ my but on it if it too steep. Worried it may be too slow for a 100mile ride. I've made it to Soledad Mtn but it wasn't pretty. Should I bring my trusted 250 motorcycle instead or will y'all wait for me at the top of the hills?

    July 31, 2013

    • Dave E

Either motorcycle or scooter; either is welcome. :-)

      August 2, 2013

  • Dave E

The list is full, with 7 hours to go! If you won't be able to go, or your guests can't, PLEASE change your RSVP to make room for someone on the waiting list. (Don't tell anyone I said so, but if you're at the Meetup and over the limit we won't slash your tires and wreck your scooter to keep you from riding along.)

    July 24, 2013

    • Dave E

WE only go 40 to 45 maximum and never faster than the slowest rider is comfortable; scooting is all about seeing and experiencing things. To go fast, get a sport motorcycle. To have fun, get a scooter.

Those with guests, please say whether they're tandem or on separate scooters (and their cc.) Also, please update your profiles to show what scooters you have. All that information helps us plan and lead the ride to maximize your FUN!
