Los Angeles - 50 places around the city for a fun run

  • Needs a date

  • Needs a location

  • This is something that I have always wanted to do and now with the ease of the scootering, proximity of L.A. and with Spring quickly approaching, what would be some of your 50 iconic locations of the L.A. area to connect the dots for a weekend fun run of the city? Something from film, historical, etc. that would make for some good pictures? 1. Hollywood sign 2. Randy's Donuts 3. Santa Monica Pier 4. Rodeo Drive 5. Beverly Hills sign(s) 6. Beverly Hills Hilton 7. Griffith Observatory 8. Mann Chinese theater 9. Hollywood/Vine 10. Sunset Strip 11. Chateau Marmont Hotel 12. La Brea tar pits 13. Queen Mary etc. Let's hear some of your thoughts on iconic places throughout L.A....

We still have the 4' x 8' trailer that can haul 3 scooters, as well as the 13' Scamp trailer that sleeps 4 and has stove and refrigerator. (See 2014 comment below regarding riding to LA on a scooter, even the super-comfortable MP3.) Wonder if any of the LA people have a back yard suitable for a few tents?

Why not do it during the Fall?

Recently we rode to LA on the MP3. Even after using freeway through Pendleton it was laborious -- 40 miles of traffic lights every block, seemingly timed to prevent catching two green in a row. Trailer up, camp, ride, camp, ride, trailer home on the freeways!

Space Shuttle Endeavour (25 trips to orbit) just went on display at the California Science Center. It's down low now, where you can walk close under it, but in 4-5 years it'll be put up in launch position with external tank and solid rocket boosters. I'd put the CSC very high on the list. Let's get this two-group adventure off the ground by this spring, before we get caught up in Amerivespa! (I remember looking up at the "OLLYWOODLAND" sign; does anyone else?

This sounds like a weekend ride I'll keep checking the any updates on the ride. sounds great.

Depending when it is, I would go. Sounds fun. Let's go to Las Vegas next! :)

If you can accept freeways, of course, it's only about 115 miles. Presumably the cars/trucks and their trailers would take that route.

    November 21, 2011

  • Dave E

Best route I know is same way we went to March (Pomerado, Bear Valley, Valley Ctr, Cole Grade, SR-76, S-16) to Temecula, then Old Town Front and Jefferson thru Temecula and Murrieta, Kalmia to Washington-Palomar, Clinton Keith to Grand (SR-74) and Lake past Elsinore, Temescal Canyon until it becomes Ontario. In Corona, R on Main, L on River Road-Archibald. In Ontario, L on Edison-Grand, then Golden Spr, Colima, SR-72, Washington, Alameda, etc. -- about 150 miles to central LA.

Have not heard of a date or a event. Not committing to anything yet.

    May 3, 2011

  • Dave E

Perry, can we get dibs on enough space for an MP3 and a GTS-250? We then could pull our 13' Scamp trailer (sleeps 4, stove, refrigerator, heater) and we and a couple of others could sleep in it -- and we could cook in it or use it as an HQ, if some kindly LA member would let us park it in their driveway. We could convoy up, along with the freeway-legal scooters.

I want to make some sort of joke about "the Two in the Bed" but cant quite get the right angle on it.....

    May 2, 2011

  • Perry

I can get 6 in the trailer and 2 in the truck bed

    May 2, 2011

  • Dave E

Does anyone have a truck or trailer capable of carrying a dozen or more scooters?

We need to find a Hotel in LA/Hollywood with good secure underground parking.
Truck up on Friday evening with bikes & luggage.
Ride Saturday Morning out to Beach Areas Through the Hills.
Saturday evening Ride to an Eating destination Like Bob's Big Boy on Ventura for Cruise Night)
...Or "he Hat"in Pasadena has awesome Pastrami & Cheeseburgers.
Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Hollywood Hills, Sunset Blvd, Mulholland Drive. PCH out to Malibu or South to Palos Verdes.
    The Ideas are without Limit.

My Idea would be to Truck all the bikes to Mulholland Drive and start from there.

Sandy, rocks, tight curves - means unleash the "beast in your Heart" . SD has a few places like that, all my skills were gathered by age 15, but some people dont have those skills. I am gonna ride to LA again soon on my Little Scoot. I miss LA

    April 25, 2011

LA scooting is a HOOT but those canyons are like NOTHING we have here. So much more difficult. Sandy, rocks, tight curves. Not for new riders or riders with limited experience in canyons with obstacles. I've been on 2 LA tours with Justin, he's a GREAT tour guide and put together a great ride for all skill levels but I'd be worried for SDSS riders on those canyons because we just don't have ANYTHING like to practice on. Makes Palomar Mnt look like a cake walk.

Excuse me?? Where's the invite for the Scooter Club of Metro Phoenix...damn! I just did this ride ( or most of it) per Skootz Kabootz (LA Scooter Club... be smart and take him up on his offer). Don't forget Whiskey A GoGo. I did that and Beverly hills and Mel's Drive Inn and the Hollywood Sign, all in just a few hours. The drive to the sign is fantastic but not for green riders. Let me know, I'll post for the Phx crowed. Glen

Our light 4' x 8' trailer can carry the MP3 and GTS, but not sure if we could cram in another (even a small one.) What we need is a large trailer, 8' wide, that could carry many scooters crosswise; the owners then could pool $ and pay the fuel for the driver of the tow car. Then we could (separately) tow along our little 13' Scamp mini-travel trailer with stove, refrigerator and microwave; all camp somewhere and have a potluck cookout, as we did on the Borrego Wildflower Overnighter!

    April 24, 2011

  • Dave E

Our groups should do more together. (If only we had a non-freeway way to get from here to there without riding an extra 50 miles!) I'm for trailering up and camping, though.

Justin here. I organize the LASG with Eric. Saw the post and immediately thought it would be great to co-ordinate something. We know a ton of great local routes and rides and if we can finalize a wish list of what you most want to do/see while you're here we can put together the LA portion of the ride. Maybe even suggest a couple of things. We should figure out dates first as we have some rides scheduled months in advance. Who is organizing? Email me and we can start planning. Sounds like fun!

Maybe we could trailer up, meet with the Los Angeles scooter group and join them on one of their rides?

    February 15, 2011

  • Jason

Since I have the slowest top speed , I was thinking since I am in LA already with my scooter I will just meet up :P , because in the city streets I am sure I will be able to keep up fine. But by the time you decide to scoot up here I will have my scooter back in SD where it belongs :P Maybe I will go to these places alone and post some pics?

    January 28, 2011

  • karenina

Travis, you can "suggest a date and time". Did I see a post that said this would have to be an overnighter? k

    January 25, 2011

i love following this, but I have a few Q and have started a post in Discussion>Advice. This here section is for IDEAS and folks who want to vote on them to gauge interest in a ride becoming Calendared. Lovingly, your hall monitor (snort!)

you have fuel injectors ? I dont think i have that on my 2Stroke :P but i dont think you get 84miles per gallon. I use cheap 87 but mix with octane booster to make like 95 octane , when i drive to PB to Poway or Fashion Valley to SDSU

    January 24, 2011

  • Perry

You have to have Military exchange rights to get gas on base. I only use premium gas from a major chain that has a cleaner (ie techron, etc.) in it. I would rather pay more for the gas vs paying to replace the injector and service the throttle body.

    January 24, 2011

  • karenina

"Nothank you" on the LA run. "Yes" on the Premium poll.

    1 · January 24, 2011

  • Nina T

No, you're not the only one, I use premium to scoot around.

    January 24, 2011

  • Pax!!

Gas for $3.17 a gallon? Am I the only idiot who puts premium in her scooter?

    January 24, 2011

  • Pax!!

I'm so glad you found the ride information Jason...I had a feeling it would get your motor revving. As soon as Travis sees your entries I think there will be a lot more "movement" about the ride :)

Spring time? Not now? aww man you guys(ladies) got me all excited! I dont think about WEATHER conditions when i ride. Sometimes i think about wearing my "long-john" tights to stay extra warm, but i never do, There are some cold spots but it just makes me wanna drive faster. All DAY LA weather is warm, about 6pm is when it cools down but its NOT COLD. Dec 15- January 8th it was COLD, but its been warm warm these days. -- I grew up in Canada, there is no COLD in Southern Cali .

If i do the SD to LA again, there is a Guest LANE to enter the Camp Pen base, I will exit Las Pulgas out the base, there is route from there to El Camino Real(which becomes PCH) . This is the quicker way which i didnt take last time on my 50. If you are wondering , no i dont use no GPS, info is all stored in my head. Its very easy to remember. I wish i had higher top speed :P haha

    January 22, 2011

  • Jason

Ahh here it is! Those places in LA sound like FUN , Just on Thursday i went to the Hollywood Sign and Griffin Obs. I was in a small car but i was driving, I take my scooter to Hollywood at least 2-3 times a week. Would be fun to go up to the Hw Sign.
Getting up to LA along PCH is nice. As a single person on a weak looking 50cc of course they let me go through camp pen to be safe, no problem. But a whole group. I think as long as we tell them where we know where to EXIT we should be ok.

    January 22, 2011

  • Pax!!

Hey, one of our very own...JASON..is a renowned rider for riding his 50cc scooter up to L.A. at least twice...that I know of. Perhaps we can get him interested in this ride...and those who don't want to do highways can go his route. Just a thought.

    January 22, 2011

  • Lynlee

I like the idea a lot but only one of our scooters is truly freeway worthy so that may impact out attendance.

    January 22, 2011

  • Meg

This might be something that could be planned with the LA group and Eric for the two meetup groups to get together. Spring is great weather for scooting, or spring-like, like last weekend and this. Unfortunately for me, I tutor AP kids for the national test, four of the spring weekends, and I'll be in Europe for two, so I probably wouldn't be able to participate. :)

    January 22, 2011

  • Perry

While I like the idea of LA scenic trips you have to factor in 4-6 hours to get there and back on LA freeways, more time for surface streets or small scoots

    January 22, 2011

  • Pax!!

Hey, how about adding: Mulholland Drive and Laurel Canyon? Both of these roads are famous and should be a cool ride.
