IDYLLWILD BANZAI (231+ miles)

  • Needs a date

  • Needs a location

  • We'll let you know, when we know!
  • Finally wanna try this one, this summer (2016.) Not ready to list it yet, but please think about it. It won't be feasible until the days are longer. That's why we haven't picked a date and time yet; but we're past the Vernal Equinox and on Daylight Saving Time, so it might be soon..

Our longest 1-day ride ever, and it gives limited time there; but we've done it before, both as a one-day trip and as an overnighter. A really lovely route but best in spring or summer with long days, and you'd need a very comfortable scooter to do it in one day. We'd leave early (probably NLT 0800.) Far easier as an overnighter or long weekend; we did that too, spending a day hiking near Idyllwild, and it was great. Campgrounds in Idyllwild itself and at Hurkey Creek 8 miles away. We invite constructive comments!

      Seven to spare, then!

Saturday, so that we have Sunday to recover :-)

  • Dave E

Any preferences for when we'll do it? Saturday or Sunday? March or April? (Remember, this should be a good wildflower year so we'll probably do a Borrego Wildflower Ride in April or May, either an overnighter or a one-day long ride.)

Latest version with start/finish at Cycle Gear on Kearny Mesa Rd, to/from central Idyllwild, is 231 miles. We go up via Ramona, Santa Ysabel, Warner Springs and Aguanga, thence 371, 74 and 243 to Idyllwild. The return is west on 74 to Hemet, south on 3 to 79, then through Temecula and Pala, 76 west to Old 395, south through Escondido, a quick on/off I-15 to cross Lake Hodges, then down Pomerado and Kearny Villa Road to the start. It's an absolutely beautiful ride.

いー、ね! I am definitely interested. Up-n-back would suit me better.

  • Dave E

I fear many of the RSVP's on this one are no longer valid. Tom, Stefan, Sammy, are you still interested?

    January 7

    • Stefan L.

Yes, I'm still interested in this ride.
      Count me in.

For those of us who are non-campers (every day for me is camping - I live on a boat with rescue animals) I'm up for an out-and-back same day, on my Honda Big Ruckus 250, with Dave and Sheryl E! Let's go! Thanks Dave and Sheryl for all that you do!

Never got around to this ride, but let's do it this spring or summer! Let us know if you're still interested. (Obviously it wouldn't be 50-friendly, but good 150's probably would have no trouble other than a sore fundament.)

I vote straight through. Do our own version of a TT event.

    150 also ....

I ride a '64 vespa 150. It only goes about 50 mph normally, 55-60 mph down hill. Would this ride be feasible for me?

    1 · January 28, 2014

    • Dave E

When I did it on an MP3-250 I spent long periods at 50 but seldom much higher. However, you'd be maxed-out much of the time, possibly hard on the engine. Email me with your Email address (Meetup can't do attachments) and I'll send you the route. You can try parts of it while I'm waiting for surgery (Feb. 27 now) and recovery, plus longer days. Might be a butt-hurter too, 8-9 hours in the saddle on a 150. Might be OK if we do an overnighter though; could go more slowly, and half the riding per day.

  • Stefan L.

I'm up for it. This ride will be fun.

    December 22, 2013

  • Dave E

Probably in April or May, if I can manage to reschedule hip-replacement surgery in early February as currently hoped.

    December 19, 2013

  • Wagehog

I'm up for it. I've done close to 300 one day.

    December 18, 2013

  • Dave E

It's still a valid idea, for this coming spring or summer!

From above: "Campgrounds are in Idyllwild itself and at Hurkey Creek 8 miles away." Of course, you conld hike up the Devil's Slide trail and camp free up there, or (if flush) stay at one of Idyllwild's numerous hotels.

    February 7, 2013

Guys, are you up for a 1-day 238-mile banzai run, or would you prefer a 2-day overnighter, easier on sore posteriors?

Have opened a Discussion page on this ride. Go to [Discussions / Discuss & Plan Rides]. Lots of new stuff there, with revised postings.
