1st Sunday Picnic Ride for May -- POSTPONED! (Mission Bay CircumScoot IV)

  • May 5, 2013 · 9:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

A SPECIAL SUNDAY RIDE. Meet and socialize 9:30 AM, pre-ride talk 10:15, ride out at 10:30. (Note that we're starting later than usual.)  Speeds will be moderate, suitable for smelling flowers or watching scenery.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo, we'll start with a loop past Old Town and up to the Serra Museum for a view of the bay we'll be riding around, then down the hill to circumnavigate the country's largest manmade water park. We'll check out all the picnic areas, grassy lawns, beaches, points, bays and back roads and cover the entire shoreline, with plenty of people-watching thrown in.  Along the way we can stop for a picnic lunch and perhaps watch the model yachts at play.  This one's only about 36 miles, 50cc-friendly and also totally suitable for new riders.  Expect to be back at the start by early afternoon.

Check all your scooter's vitals (tires, brakes, oil, coolant, lights, etc.) and top off gas tank before the meetup.  Carry lunch, snacks, water, extra clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, cell phone, etc.  We strongly recommend sturdy shoes or boots and protective clothing.

Ride maps and/or turn lists will be provided.  No scooter will be left behind, whether at  hills, stop signs or traffic lights; the "sweep" (last) rider will have radio to the leader.

NOTE:  THIS RIDE HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO EXPECTED BAD RIDING WEATHER.  WATCH FOR A NEW DATE.

Started drizzling in the Cajon Zone around 3:00.

Drizzle resumed here early afternoon. Currently at Mission Bay YC 61.1 degrees, light rain, SSE 11, gusts to 16. Not a good scootering day.

This morning light drizzle and cold, gusty wind in Serra Mesa. No drizzle now but 100% overcast, pavement still damp. Mission Bay currently 61.6 degrees, wind south 10-20 MPH gusty, rain 40% increasing to 60% this evening and 70% tomorrow.

None in Clairemont, although it is a bit chilly, cloudy, no rain yet

  • Wagehog

Nary a drop in site, here in the Cajon Zone. Anyone else get any rain?

Is anyone gonna have breakfast at Perry's Cafe? I always see that place from the 5 when I go to Fiesta Island but never tried it. It's not owned by Perry from our group is it?

    May 1, 2013

    • Wagehog

Is the Perry's in El Cajon a sister store?

      yes.

Latest Mission Bay forecast: probable drizzle, 61 degrees, chance of thunderstorms, precipitation chance 50%, up to 20-25 MPH winds. (The LA Scooter Group postponed their Cinco de Mayo ride also.) The good side: when we do reschedule it, we won't have to fight traffic and street closures in Old Town! :-)

    Hi,
Bummer about the weather! I was looking forward to meeting everyone this Sunday.
I just moved from Escondido to City Heights. I am a member of the Slow Burns in Escondido. I ride a 150cc. I am looking to meeting a great bunch of people from San Diego to ride with.

WORSE NEWS: Forecast of 66 and drizzle in bay area (MBYC) now is 64 degrees, drizzle or rain, later chance of thunderstorms. South wind, 15 MPH. We still have only 3 people registered besides the two leaders. Conditions now very negative, either for riding or for the usual watching of wildflowers, bikinis and board-shorts. Things didn't improve -- they got worse. Sorry, guys! :-(

  • Miccilina P.

How about we just postpone it to the following Saturday? That would be 5/11, day before Mom's Day. Micci

    May 2, 2013

    • Dave E

I'm committed for second Saturdays and second Sundays, as well as third Saturdays and fourth Sundays. Sunday the 19th also is taken, as is Saturday the 25th. Unless something changes, that means I have NO free weekend days in May. (The route and turns list, over 80 carefully-selected turns, are available to anyone who wants 'em.) Maybe later in the summer?

DISCOURAGING NEWS: It's Thursday and we have only 3 people registered besides the two leaders. DRIZZLE is forecast for Sunday with showers the next day, and the latest prediction is for a sudden cool-down to a Sunday high of 66 in the beach area. Alas, those conditions are not promising, either for riding or for the usual watching of wildflowers, bikinis and board-shorts. Watch this space, but if things don't improve by tomorrow night we'll postpone.

Kirk, if you'll be coming, please RSVP at top right -- and please answer the questions that pop up, since they help us plan how best to conduct the ride...

Ha! I didn't even see this ride. I'm in but have to be back in N Park by 1pm. I may get my neighbor to join us too. She just borrowed my charger and wants to start riding again.

Would hate to see this cancelled, I was really looking forward to not having to know where to turn, lol just be a follower, that's me, someone else knows, I just ride and enjoy, oh well, would not do this by myself, not as much fun. Micci

VOTE HERE! Time for another "50cc-friendly" local ride. Two choices: Mission Bay CircumScoot or Balboa Park Tuckerman Traverse. MBC is circumnavigation of Mission Bay, visiting all the shoreline, points and picnic areas; BPTT is attempt to ride all the roads in Balboa Park. Both pass by many restrooms and picnic areas where we could stop, and both are under 20 miles with 50cc scooters welcome; no freeways, minimum stoplights.

Which'll it be, folks? (Long-ride fans relax; we're planning a long one for after Amerivespa, and AV itself will have some long-ride options.)

Choose the flattest route to be easy on the 50's

      April 24, 2013

    • Dave E

I've done so. The only hill of any kind is on the way to the Serra Museum; once down that, everything is at sea level. Several 50's were on a previous edition and had no problem.

My scooterin will start in June

    April 23, 2013

  • Dave E

Old Town is having a Cinco de Mayo festival; I've Emailed the organizers about road closures. If they're extensive, we may have to bypass Old Town and go directly up to the Serra Museum.

    April 23, 2013

  • Dave E

In response to the outpouring of rider comment (not a single word!) we're going to respond to the growing sunshine and burgeoning spring and do another Mission Bay CircumScoot. The Balboa Park Tuckerman Traverse will come later in the summer, after more test-riding and refinement.

I was just out in Borrego 2 weeks ago and the wild flowers were not blooming yet.....this was at Tamerisk Grove in Anza Borrego. You may still be ok!? :o)

We hiked up Hellhole Canyon last Sunday. Almost all the brittlebush, desert mallow, desert lavender and chuparosa were well past their peaks; ocotillo were close to it with some way beyond. Only the cactus flowers showed signs of having any future (about 2/3 of thier blossoms were about to open, with the rest fully displayed.) Very little visible on the roads to Borrego. ;-(

Wow..... they bloomed quick then...... hardly a flower in sight when I was there

      April 15, 2013

  • Dave E

Further research suggests we've waited too long for wildflowers, this not being a banner year. Our best ever Borrego trip was mid-February '05, with fair displays in late March '05 ('05 was a super-year) and early March '08. The SDSS Borrego Wildflower Overnighter was late March of '10, also with fair displays. This year's peak is forecast for early April, so May seems pretty iffy.

Any other suggestions? We're here for you...
