Introduction to Photography

This beginners workshop introduces the fundamentals of photography during a walking tour of the beautiful Balboa Park. If you just bought a camera or are new to photography and want to learn how to take beautiful photos, this workshop is for you. This workshop will introduce you to the basics of exposure and composition techniques that will open the door to endless photographic possibilities. This is a hands on learning experience and a wonderful opportunity to capture beautiful photos of one of San Diego's most scenic areas under the instruction of experienced professional photographers.

This workshop will cover:

  • How cameras work
  • Camera controls and functions
  • Lenses
  • Filters & Accessories
  • The importance of light
  • Using shutter speed to control motion
  • Using aperture to control depth of field
  • Metering modes
  • White balance
  • Basic composition techniques

This workshop takes place outdoors and involves a little walking, so we recommend that you dress comfortably.

Don't forget to bring your camera, charged batteries, and memory cards.

We recommend that you have a DSLR camera or an advanced point and shoot camera with shutter priority and aperture priority modes. We do not rent equipment.

Very informative. Instructors covered all aspects of getting to know your camera as well as the do's and dont's. Great class for a very beginner as well as someone that has limited knowledge of their equipment as well as those that my have been using their camera for a while.

Vey good. A LOT was covered, covered well, and also covered respectfully (no "I know more than everyone" ego). Both Don and Nicholas were personable. However the group was a bit large, so when we paused for the lecture, Nicholas talked only to the "east" side of the group, which meant (because of airplane, cars and dog noise, some of us on the "west" couldn't hear him). It would have been good if he repeated the "east" information for the "west" people. I loved that an ipad was used to show the difference in photos. Early on we paused for about 45 minutes for the lecture which was excellent, but it wasn't near restroom. 1/2 way through the presentation, I needed to go to the restroom, but no public restrooms were available anywhere nearby - not in the museum and not in the torture exhibit. I ended up leaving about 1 hour early (sorry) because I REALLY needed to find a restroom . Maybe the lecture could be near the Theatre in the round (where there ARE restrooms)

I would Echo all of the above. I was one of those sitting on the "West" side and so the sound in the background was challenging. One suggestion would be to reverse the stopping points and begin "Start at the point" near the museum for the lecture and end up at the first stop point if you will. I learned a great deal about my camera and felt the expertise between Nikon and Cannon was really good and found the meet up to be very worthwhile-Great Location with a lot of shooting ops-Thank you so much

Is bringing a guest like another student paying the full fee? Or, is it really like just a mate for fun or an observer with a discounted fee?
