This workshop will cover:

  • How cameras work
  • Camera controls and functions
  • Lenses
  • Filters & Accessories
  • The importance of light
  • Using shutter speed to control motion
  • Using aperture to control depth of field
  • Metering modes
  • White balance
  • Basic composition techniques

This workshop takes place outdoors and involves a little walking, so we recommend that you dress comfortably.

Don't forget to bring your camera, charged batteries, and memory cards.

We recommend that you have a DSLR camera or an advanced point and shoot camera with shutter priority and aperture priority modes. We do not rent equipment.

It sounds like a non panning shot you are describing, the only way the background would have come out clear at 1/30th of a second is if the camera was very still. You have the settings right, 1/500 will freeze pretty much everything in the scene-did you upload the images? If so I can take a look at them and let you know what I see-thanks

    Hi,
My panning shots did not come out like they were supposed to. My subject is blurry and background is clear. My setting according to my computer was f/22 1/30, should it have been 1/500th to get the subject clear and background blurry. And to get the blurry effect on a portrait shot I understand the Aperture should be low. What should the lens feet setting be set on?

That was the best 3 hours I've spent on a Saturday. Thanks Donald and Nick. You've forever changed my relationship with the auto settings on my camera. Tv or Av, baby!!!

What a great class yesterday. Just what I needed to finally figure out how to really start to use my camera. I must say it was kind of embarrassing when people would ask me about the settings I used in a shot and I couldn't tell them. LOL Well, now I can! Can't wait to take another class. I just have to decide which one. Thanks guys!!

    Hi there,

I just purchased the Canon T3i with an 18-55mm and a 75-300mm lens. I am new to the more professional world of photography and am by no means proficient with a DSLR. Would the intro to photography class be a good place for me to start or would you recommend something else?

    Thanks!

Hi. I have a Canon G-12. Will that be suitable for the class?

    December 26

    • Donald Carlton

That camera will be fine; however, the minimum aperture is f/8 so you will be limited on depth of field and aperture flexibility.

  • Rebecca Cisinsky

I have a camera with 3 different lenses? Do you suggest to bring a certain one or all?

    December 21

    • Nicholas Andrews

Sure, why not? I think it would be fun to mess about with the various lenses you have. It's certainly not a requirement for the class and the class may or may not cover all of the lenses you have although certainly some of them. Of course if you have certain questions or would like to learn more about their specific applications we will work with you to make sure you are ready to go with any and all of your equipment-

I have a Groupon code that I didn't get to put in, because I had trouble getting it at first. I have it now, though, so should I just bring it to the class?

    December 15

    • Donald Carlton

Yes. Everybody should bring their smartphone or printed vouchers to the workshop.
