Scenic Loop: Del Mar - Lake Hodges - Elfin Forest - Coast

This very scenic loop has a little bit of everything: eucalyptus forest, country clubs, orange groves, Lake Hodges climb (comparable to Torrey Pines outside road climb), gorgeous view of lake and dam, spooky Harmony Grove, avocado groves, smile-generating Elfin Forest descent, hilly horse farms, cute firemen, strangely-out-of-place-but-oddly-cute San Elijo Hills, La Costa rollers, lagoon, coastal cruise.  Very few (six?) stoplights/signs in the first 24 miles of this route makes for very enjoyable cycling.

This is a social pace (12 - 14 mph), no drop ride - we stick together for fun and safety.  I've done this route in 3 hours in the past, but expect potentially longer time with group (allowing for photos, flat tires, firemen oogling, etc.)  I love hills even if I do ride them very slow. :)

There are 2 enroute water stops in the less populated hilly area; plentiful water stops in coastal areas. It is 40 miles with 2,981-foot elevation gain.  Here is a route map, with printable cue sheet: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2338681

Meet at 8:30 in front of the Chipotle Restaurant in the center front of Flower Hill Mall.  We roll no later than 8:40.  Feel free to call or text me (Jill) at[masked]-0317.

I plan on having lunch afterward and would love it if you join me. Several options at Flower Hill, or in Encinitas/Solana Beach on last leg of ride.

Feel free to ask questions!

Rain or dense fog cancels this ride.

NOTES:

Parking at Flower Hill Promenade: Please park either on the back side of the mall (quick left on San Andreas Dr, quick left up Flower Hill Dr) or in the new parking structure behind Whole Foods. The mall vendors and patrons don't look kindly on cyclists who take prime parking spots for hours at a time. Don't want to lose the privilege of parking here.

Harmony Grove Water Stop: This is a church that allows cyclists to use their outdoor tap. Please be respectful, don't waste water, clean up after yourself, else we may lose the privilege.

Standard Preparedness:  Ride with at least one water bottle (two is better), helmet, extra tubes and/or patch kit, CO2 cartridges or pump, $5 cash and credit card in case of mechanical breakdown that requires bus or taxi.  Highly encouraged to carry cellphone, snack, electrolytes if it is hot outside.  Please have completed your bike safety check 24 hours prior to the ride:  break pads, chain, gears, derailleur, rims, tires.

Nice route! A bit trafficky in places, but well frequented by cyclists (so cars know to look out for you). There are a few gentle climbs and a cool curvy downhill on the last half. Would love to ride it again. :) Thanks, Jill!

I think I have done this ride and it is lovely. Is it about 38 miles? Not sure my legs are quite ready for that. I am a little out of shape from a bad hamstring. If you know the total distance, please let me know. Thanks.

Thanks, Jill. That's about what I thought. I need to get a few more rides in alone before I humiliate myself in public. :-) looking forward to joining the group soon.

Hi Lupe, Don't let the hills stop you. I finally got over my hill anxiety, now I love them and don't feel the least bit bad about being slow on them! The Cyclists Training Bible to me the best thing to do is turn my hill weakness into strength by working it. :)

There is no Coaster service (the San Diego railroad system) April 20th or 21st. If this prevents you from attending this ride, let me know and I' be opening to rescheduling the ride date!
