This Mother’s Day, treat your family to some quality time on a bicycle. This scenic neighborhood route shows off five of our lovely parks in the City Heights area, starting and ending at Ward Canyon Neighborhood Park. This ride is especially made for women, mothers and families, as the pace will be leisure, but anyone is welcome to join.
From Ward Canyon Neighborhood Park, this group will roll just over three miles to the lovely Azalea Park below the Manzanita Canyon. Everyone is welcome to bring food for a picnic rest at Azalea Park.
When everyone feels ready to continue, one group will ride back to Ward Canyon Neighborhood Park starting point for anyone who would like. For riders who want some more time on the bike, the remaining group will continue riding. This group will pass three more parks and the Chollas Reservoir before returning to Ward Canyon Neighborhood Park.
The following are some things you might want to know:
WHAT TO EXPECT: Participants should know how to ride a bike, even if it has been a while. Any bike will work for this route, but it should be in working order. It is best if you are able to check your bicycle at least a few days before the ride to make sure your bike has working brakes and the tires are not flat. Take it to a bike shop (or a good friend) to look it over if you are not sure.
Additionally, there will be inclines along the route, but nothing to fear. If there are any inclines that wear you out, the group will wait before moving on – even if that means you would rather walk :) We are not in any hurry, so take your time.
Most importantly, you'll have fun!
WHAT TO BRING: Water, sunscreen, a working bike as well as spare tubes or patch kits if possible. You don’t need to know how to fix a flat, but bringing the tools will help. You will also need a helmet for each rider, and any food or non-alcoholic beverages that you would like to have at the picnic in Azalea Park.
WHAT TO WEAR: Comfortable shoes and clothes that are not too loose or hang down too much to potentially get caught in or on your bike.
PARKING: There is street parking by Ward Canyon Neighborhood Park. Questions? Please email [masked]
More info about the CycloFemme organization (from their website): What is CycloFemme?
CycloFemme is a socially-driven grass-roots celebration of women on bikes. We are of a growing community, for a growing community, and 100% volunteer-based.
Our annual Mother’s Day ride unites riders, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity or bicycle preference to share in the joy of cycling. Year round, our global community inspires and empowers other women, by making their passion public and the joy in cycling contagious. In our first year, 163 rides were registered in 14 countries with many others joining in to celebrate in their own special way. In our second, we grew to 229 rides in 31 countries. Ride with us as we Honor the Past, Celebrate the Present, Empower the Future of Women in Cycling.
