Ride 24 miles Lake Murray - Mt Helix - Mission Trails Loop

I'm riding this 24 mile loop (route map: ), and welcome up to 3 other riders to come along.

This is a 'no drop' ride, starting/Finishing at Lake Murray parking lot by the concession stand (enter from Kiowa Rd). From there we follow the lake trail to Baltimore Dr, climb up Jackson Dr to Lemon St where the real climbing begins, topping out at Mt Helix Nature Theater. We descend winding Alto Dr to Grossmount Blvd into Fletcher Hills, take the Hillside trail down to Cuyamaca St, then another bike path north to Mission Gorge Rd. Turn west and ride thru Mission Trails park via Fra Serra Trail (another regroup pt at the visitor center) before climbing Jackson Dr back to Park Ridge Blvd into Lake Murray. Re-group at top of climbs.

This is a road ride, but we'll spend many miles on many paved cycling/hiking trails.

Ride preview:

**This ride is automatically canceled in event of rain or fog (believe me, you wouldn't want to descend Alto Dr when it is wet or foggy).

If you come, please check bike (road bike only) tires, brakes, cables before hand. The climb of Lemon St - Mt Helix Dr is about 2.6 miles of 6-8% grade. There are some relatively flat bits along the route for recovery. The descent of Alto Dr is very narrow and winding - including 1 switchback turn.

Jackson Dr climb is comparable to N Torrey Pines Rd climb from the beach to the golf course, but a bit shorter. So you want to have good gearing for serious climbing.

Helmet recommended. You should bring spare tube(s), pump or CO2 cartridges, full bottles of drinks, snacks, wind jacket (might get chilled on the descent of Mt Helix) and $10 cash in case of mechanical breakdown that requires taking a bus or a cab home.

We got lucky. It turned out a beautiful day for a ride. I had a blast riding with Cornelia & Shelly (sorry Eche couldn't come. Maybe next time! :o) ). You lasses did really well! Mt Helix still offered spectacular view even on a very cloudy day. The only hiccup was running into construction (laying new water line) along Jackson Dr (anyone planning on riding Jackson Dr between Mission Gorge & Park Ridge Blvd, the east/south-bound lane will be icky for a week or two. Will have to ride on sidewalk for a stretch (or take the very steep Hemingway Dr variation).

Thanks Michell, great ride!! The weather cleared up nicely, I'm glad we went. I also really liked the new route avoiding the 52 merge.

Aha! Looks like we're in luck! Just checked webcams on Mt Helix and in Santee and and it looks dry out for the ride. Will start at Lake Murray concession at 10AM as planned. :o)

Hi all. Just a reminder that this ride will be automatically canceled in event of rain or fog in La Mesa & Santee areas on Saturday morning. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The forecast keeps changing. Will post again around 7:30am tomorrow on whether we're go or not.
