Hike and Picnic - Mount Agamenticus and surrounding trails

It looks  to be an ideal early fall day for a hike and picnic!

(This beautiful photo taken by Meetup member Leah Melquist on 9/29/13 - top of Mount A on clear crisp autumn day!).

With the cooler weather days upon us soon, time to get back outside again!  Join us for a fun hike and picnic today.  It is very close to, or at, peak foliage.

We will meet at the edge of the base parking lot (not at the top - GPS devices have been known to be in error by steering people to the top).

Chase's Pond Road becomes Mountain Road; there are no turns.  Parking lot is on the right ~ 6 1/2 miles from the highway ramps.

I'm estimating that we'll walk about 6 miles give or take; combined with the picnic, allow about 3 1/2 hours or so.

Hiking or walking shoes with non-slip soles are recommended.  Pack along a couple of sandwiches, beverages, etc.

As we will be having our picnic on the trail, pack along a towel or small blanket if you wish to do so (and camera if you're into photography and nature).

Dogs are great, but York has strict leash and 'pooper-scooper' ordinances.  They must be kept on leashes at all times, and pet waste must be scooped and carried off premises.  The way it goes.....

As with all Meetups, members assume all associated risks.

Look forward to seeing you there!

Hello All: I woke up with a full blown head cold on Saturday, went to send an e-mail to Randy at 7:00, and my monitor had a big black stripe down the middle! Guess I need a new one, sending this from work. So sorry I was a no show, hope you did not wait for me. I was really looking forward to the hike, but unfortunately can't do this upcoming weekend. Maybe another time.

Glad everyone enjoyed our Meetup on Saturday! I am thinking ahead to this weekend, already. Seems to be a sure bet for a nice fall weekend (and much cooler, about time!). Also, the very last of any foliage. We talked about the Sweet Trail. Any interest in joining us? Will be helpful to have one or two people who have hiked this before. I know it's 8.6 miles. I'll be doing some research on the directions - and will send a general e-mail to everybody. Also, thinking Maudslay for the other weekend day. Am open to either Saturday or Sunday; Sweet Trail or Maudslay. We had a great group for the last hike - so hopefully you can join us next weekend again!

Randy, I've done the Sweet Trail a few times, but only one way. We usually park cars at both ends and shuttle people back and forth. It takes some coordination but it better than waking 8 miles. Also, there is very little parking at Bay Rd and even less on Long Marsh.

Hi Marilyn - Thanks for the information. I've heard from others that parking space can be limited, which can be an issue. Is there room for say, 10 or 12 cars? If much smaller than that (as there will be others there as well), that might make it difficult.

Thanx Randy for a good walk thru the woods. Just next time let's bring blankets to lay over the moss and take a knap after the picnic.

Randy - what trails are you thinking about on Mt. A?

I'm not familiar with the Cedar Trail, but I'm game.

Hi Marilyn: We'll do the Ring Trail loop and to the top and back....about 3 miles. After that we will head into the Water District property across the street for our picnic (or perhaps Cedar Trail, depending on how far people want to walk). Altogether I would estimate about 6 miles and 3 - 3 1/2 hours.
