Re: [php-49] good work flow for tracking db changes

I've seen systems where devs connect to a shared dev db, but also use a versioned file to record query changes. A typical change would look like:

-----
-- 4/3/13 -- Adding foo column to user table, re: feature X
-----
ALTER TABLE user ADD foo ...

This is probably fine from a pragmatic perspective but I'm sure there's a more ideal way to do it.

Separate files, well named.  You should have a date, or some counting system, in the name.  You want to be able to replay the changes from just about any point with relative ease.

On top of that, build a script to do the actual syncing using those files.  Replaying/applying a significant number of changes by hand is error prone, to say the least.

We've added another developer to a project and now I need an easy way
to keep db changes in sync with him. Any suggestions? My first thought
was to subversion a file and just add new changes to the top and check
each change in.
