November Eastside Discussion: The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America

Meet us in Room 3 at the Bellevue Library. You may bring your own food/beverage (no alcohol); we just have to clean up afterwards. This month's book was nominated by Martin. Anyone want to volunteer to bring snacks? Sorry about the formatting of this event. Meetup made some changes, and either they eliminated some formatting options or I just haven't figured out how it works yet.

The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America by Bill Bryson

A travelogue by Bill Bryson is as close to a sure thing as funny books get. The Lost Continent is no exception. Following an urge to rediscover his youth (he should know better), the author leaves his native Des Moines, Iowa, in a journey that takes him across 38 states. Lucky for us, he brought a notebook.

With a razor wit and a kind heart, Bryson serves up a colorful tale of boredom, kitsch, and beauty when you least expect it.

Bryson was born in Des Moines, Iowa. For twenty years he lived in England, where he worked for the Times and the Independent, and wrote for most major British and American publications. His books include travel memoirs (Neither Here Nor There; The Lost Continent; Notes from a Small Island) and books on language (The Mother Tongue; Made in America). His account of his attempts to walk the Appalachian Trail, A Walk in the Woods, was a huge New York Times bestseller. He lives in Hanover, New Hampshire, with his wife and his four children.

Waiting List: If this meetup is full, do not despair! We almost always have room for everyone who wants to come, but you might not be notified until the last day or two. Here's what you should do:

1) Go ahead and get on the waiting list.

2) Start reading the book.

3) When a spot opens up, everyone on the waiting list will receive an email and you must confirm that you want to come before your RSVP is changed to YES.

If you have signed up and later find that you will not be coming, please be considerate and CANCEL your RSVP as soon as possible (at least one week ahead if you can) so that those on the waiting list will have more notice.

No-Show Policy: If you RSVP "yes" -- you should come to the meetup! Members who no-show to three or more events are automatically removed from the group. If you have signed up and later find that you will not be coming, please CANCEL your RSVP as soon as possible (at least one week ahead if possible.) Please see the "Pages" tab on our website for more details. Don’t be a no-show!

Goodreads.com: We've set up a Goodreads group for members to connect with each other and share book reviews and ideas online. Here is the link:

Meetup Donations:  We are not allowed to collect donations at the library. If you would like to make a donation, please contact Nile or Joy for instructions. The recommended amount is $1-2 per meetup to help with expenses.

Next Book:  Bring book ideas so that we can vote on what to read next. You can bring the actual book and we'll pass it around, or just print out a synopsis and read it to the group. We will consider books from any genre, but we don't like to read brand-new books that are hard to get at the library and aren't in paperback yet. Save those for later!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
