"Do we need a fourth film? Yes, I think we do. If you only see one of them, this is the one to choose, because it has the benefit of hindsight." (Roger Ebert)
In 1993, the bodies of Michael Moore, Christopher Byers and Stevie Branch were found in a drainage ditch in the poor rural community of West Memphis, Ark. The suspects were described as "weird" heavy metal fans who often wore black. The community seemed convinced of their guilt. As Ebert mentions, "There is a conclusion here, asking to be drawn. The reality of satanic-cult rituals are part of the narrative in many churches in that area, and the public and perhaps the jury were predisposed to believe them." The original judge, David Burnett, later a state senator, upon receipt of overwhelming evidence for a new trial refused to reconsider the case. Then celebrities like Eddie Vedder, Johnny Depp, Natalie Maines and Henry Rollins, rallied around the cause.
When we meet at a local eatery for discussion after the film, we might ask, how objective can it be, given that the director is married to the documentary's subject? Damien Echols (Subject/Producer) & Amy Berg (Director/Writer) are interviewed in this clip.
Director Amy Berg creates a sprawling, novelistic structure, rendering in acute psychological detail literally dozens of people, including the incarcerated three (now men in their mid-30s, released from prison but not exonerated), members of their families, various figures in the Arkansas legal system, and some of the activists who fought to get the case retried. Less an investigative report than a portrait of the community that forms around an ongoing court case, this conveys a patient understanding of the intricacies of law and human behavior that may be termed Kieslowskian."
