"The Gatekeepers" at the Harvard Exit Theater

We will be attending the 7:15 pm showing of "The Gatekeepers" at the Harvard Exit Theater on Capitol Hill. This film consists of interviews with the former heads of Israel's internal security agency, and was one of the nominees for Best Documentary Feature at this year's Academy Awards. Here is a description of the film taken from its official web site:

Charged with overseeing Israel’s war on terror-both Palestinian and Jewish- the head of the Shin Bet, Israel’s secret service is present at the crossroad of every decision made. For the first time ever six former heads of the agency agreed to share their insights and reflect publicly on their actions and decisions. The Gatekeepers offers an exclusive account of the sum of their success and failures. It validates the reasons that each man individually and the six as a group came to reconsider their hard-line positions and advocate a conciliatory approach toward their enemies based on a two-state solution.

Here is a preview of this film:

Rottentomatoes gives this film a 92 rating; here is the link to that web site where you can read or scan the reviews to see if this film is for you:

Here are some snippets from various reviews:

"An inside look into one of the most secretive and sophisticated intelligence apparatus in the world may not be what you expected."

"It is hard to imagine a movie about the Middle East that could be more timely, more painfully urgent, more challenging to conventional wisdom on all sides of the conflict."

"A sobering but welcome dose of honesty regarding issues and events that have otherwise been shrouded in secrecy and overheated rhetoric." (Washington Post)

Wikipedia contains the following entry describing the critical reception of this film:

"Despite its limited release, the film has garnered substantial attention from film critics. The New York Times critic A. O. Scott called the film the best documentary of 2012, deeming it "essential, eye-opening viewing if you think you understand the Middle East",[13] while Times critic Manohla Dargis named it one of the top ten movies of the year.[14] Joe Morgenstern, film critic for the Wall Street Journal, called The Gatekeepers one of the 10 best films of 2012. The film, notes Morgenstern, "brings together all the surviving directors of Shin Bet, Israel's internal security agency. What these tough and tough-minded men have to say about Israeli politicians, and the nation's current stance vis à vis its enemies, is stunning and edifying in equal measure".[15] The film went on to receive the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Documentary Film[16] and was named the Best Nonfiction Film of 2012 by the National Society of Film Critics.[17] It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature."

Meet me in the lobby of the Harvard Exit at 7:00. I am an Asian male who wears glasses and who will probably be wearing a hat of some type (beret, black rain hat). A head shot is included in the photo section of my profile so you can see for whom to look. My cell phone,[masked], will be on until the start of the program.

There will be an optional food and beverage stop at the conclusion of the film ("conclusion" = after all the credits have been shown). Meet me in the lobby where we will count heads and determine which establishment to patronize.

Damn the car!!! Of all times to break down...
I'm definitely going to see it this week. If there's anyone who wants to join me that couldn't go to last night's meetup, let me know and we should go! :)

Wish I could have stayed for the discussion afterward, I'm sure the perspectives on the film were varied and as interesting as the movie itself. Thanks for hosting, George.

I hate to go along with the crowd, but George, you did an excellent job, choosing this film and the corner hang afterward. I found the movie to be heartbreaking and hope that somehow it eventually will be able to help effect change in the Mideast.
