BLANCANIEVES at the Uptown

Come see a film that the late Roger Ebert thought so much of, he picked it as one of the films to play at Ebertfest this year.  Winner of 10 Goya Awards, including Best Picture, Blancanieves is a Spanish retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as a silent, black-and-white film.  With bullfighting.  104 minutes.

FOR THIS SCREENING, SIFF IS OFFERING US A DEAL.  WHEN BUYING YOUR TICKETS ONLINE OR IN PERSON FOR THIS EVENT, USE THE CODE CINEMA2013 TO GET YOUR TICKETS FOR $8 APIECE -- A $3 SAVINGS OFF THE REGULAR PRICE. NOTE THAT YOU WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO DO THIS FOR QUALIFYING MEETUPS.  ALSO, ONCE YOU HAVE BOUGHT YOUR TICKET, DON'T FORGET TO PICK UP A PARKING PASS FROM THE BOX OFFICE WINDOW IF YOU ARE COMING BY CAR. JUST PULL UP TO THE CURB, GRAB THE PASS, AND PARK IN THE LOT FOR FREE.

Since we are seeing the 7:15 show, we will meet between 6:45 and 7 and head into the theater around 7:05, depending on how busy it is.  Right now, the film is scheduled to be shown in Theater 3, which is the smallest of the theaters at the Uptown.  I'll have a better idea of numbers after this weekend, but you should be able to buy your tickets at the box office on the day of show, rather than having to buy them online and pay the $1.25 per ticket service fee.

Here's the link to the film on the SIFF website, which includes a trailer: http://www.siff.net/cinema/blancanieves

And here's its rating on Metacritic: http://www.metacritic.com/movie/blancanieves

Once the movie is over, we will regroup in the lobby (and wait for people who need to use the restrooms) before stopping at a local establishment for our usual post-film discussion.

Hope to see everyone there!

A great film that captures the style and spirit of the silent era better than THE ARTIST did. Gorgeous to look at, too. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. And the crowd was mercifully quiet and respectful, too.
Thanks to everyone who came out, especially those who were able to stay for our post-movie discussion -- which is the point of meetup, after all!

      SPOILER ALERT!!!

This was beautifully shot, had terrific acting and was a stylishly well-done interpretation, the tragic ending crushed me. Especially with the last shot of her tear when the man she loved slept next to her...it killed me.

I loved it!! Maribel Verdú as Encarna is excellent. She's really good at being evil. - Greg, once again...great choice. Thanks for inviting us!

Greg, I figured out my mistake when I was already sitting, with my popcorn, and couldn't find you in the theater! I liked it...lovely to look at, clever twist on the story. I don't want to spoil anything for you and the group so will wait until tomorrow to comment. :) BTW, are you going to be at the opening night gala?

Hello, everybody! It's gonna be a busy day for me. It would be great to end it with great company at the SIFF Cinema Uptown. If I'm able to purchase the ticket around noon, then I should be able to make to the showing.

    April 17, 2013

  • Greg

Also, everyone should be fine purchasing tickets day of show. Just show up a half-hour ahead of time to purchase. And don't forget to mention that you have a promo code, as all sales are final.

    April 14, 2013

  • Greg

Okay, folks, the code for discounted tickets should work now. The staff working at SIFF may not know about the code, so it's your responsibility to mention it when buying tickets. Also, if you do buy tickets online or over the phone, there is a service fee. There is NO SERVICE FEE if you buy in person. Any questions, let me know.

Just saw the trailer and it looks good.

    April 11, 2013

  • Greg

One final note: it may take a few days for the code to go into effect, so if you are buying tickets ahead of time, I would wait until next week to do so, whether it's by phone, through the Internet, or in person.

Thanks for the tip Greg! See you then.
