"Muscle Shoals" @ Harvard Exit FREE ADMISSION Oct 26 or 27

Members of the Seattle Cinema Club are invited to attend a FREE SHOWING of the highly acclaimed documentary film “Muscle Shoals” which is currently having its theatrical run at the Harvard Exit Theater in Seattle's Capitol Hill Neighborhood. Attendees can select any show time (2:00, 4:30, 7:05, or 9:35) on Saturday or on Sunday. This will not be a meetup – there will be no discussion after the film unless it is organized by the participants. Due to the generosity of a non-profit organization meetup members can claim up to four tickets to a performance while other people in the theater will be paying the regular admission of $10 or thereabouts.

This film tells the history of the recording studio located in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, which was a hotbed for rock and roll and rhythm and blues during the '60s and '70s. Here is a description taken from the Landmark Theatres' website:

“FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama was the unlikely breeding ground for a ton of hits in the 1960s and '70s, by big names both black and white: Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Jimmy Cliff, local singer Percy Sledge ("When a Man Loves a Woman"), Gregg Allman, Lynryd Skynyrd, The Rolling Stones and many more. Some of the most important and resonant songs of all time were recorded there, including "I'll Take You There," "Brown Sugar," "Mustang Sally," "Tell Mama," "Kodachrome" and "Freebird." FAME founder Rick Hall, who achieved much in his driven life, overcoming staggering tragedies, is responsible for creating the "Muscle Shoals sound." He brought black and white together in Alabama's cauldron of racial hostility to create music for the generations. Crammed with generous musical clips and fascinating anecdotes, Muscle Shoals is a crowd-pleasing feast of music. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Bono, Clarence Carter, Etta James, Alicia Keys, Paul Simon, Steve Winwood and others bear witness to Muscle Shoals' magnetism and mystery, and why it remains influential today.”

When this film opened in Seattle last week the critic for the Seattle Times gave it a rating of four stars out of four and said: “Hands down one of the best music documentaries ever made”. Rottentomatoes rates this film at 97 (out of 100). Here is a link to the rottentomatoes web site where you can read or scan all of the reviews to see if this film is for you:

My allocation of free tickets is being distributed through several meetup groups: Seattle Cinema Club, Culture Vultures, Urban on a Budget, Seattle Singles, and 50+ Singles. To obtain your ticket visit the website

http://bit.ly/MusicMovieTix

and use the group code VULTURES. You can claim up to four tickets to the showing of your choice if they are still available. You must claim your ticket no later than the early evening of the day prior to the showing. No applications will be accepted on the day of the showing. Please read the website carefully so that you understand all of the terms and conditions.

Please note that this is not like the usual radio or newspaper giveaway where more tickets are distributed than there are seats in the theater. Everyone who gets a ticket will be admitted to the showing. Please note that tickets are not transferable to other showings. Also note that there is a limit to the number tickets that will be given away. If you obtain a ticket please show up: the non-profit organization will have paid for your ticket so do not stiff them. Spread the word if you enjoyed the film.

Because there can be up to eight different showings there not be the usual post film discussion. However, if any attendee would like to meet other group members he or she can post information on how to meet in the Comments section of the web site. Folks should check this announcement in all the other groups to find like minded participants.

Great documentary. Looks like this movie could have lasted days. There is so much studio history here. The story of the personalities that made the music possible, as well as the unique location of the studios, was mesmerizing.
