We will be attending a free advanced showing of "Lone Survivor" at the Thornton Place Cinema which is located across the street from the Northgate shopping mall (south side). Here is a brief description of the film taken from rottentomatoes.com: “LONE SURVIVOR, starring Mark Wahlberg, tells the story of four Navy SEALs on an ill-fated covert mission to neutralize a high-level Taliban operative who are ambushed by enemy forces in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.”
Here a a longer description from the Hollywood Reporter:
“The recent vogue for extreme solitary survival tales -- Life of Pi, All Is Lost, Gravity -- continues with another significant entry in Lone Survivor. A very intense, close-up visualization of the best-selling memoir about a botched Navy SEALs raid in Afghanistan written by the only man who lived to tell the tale, Marcus Luttrell, Peter Berg's film rates comparisons to Black Hawk Down as an unflinching account of a U.S. military operation in the Middle East gone very wrong. The film is concerned only with what directly confronts the characters -- and, by extension, the audience -- at any given moment. But even without any discernable political tilt in the point of view, other than for a clear enthusiasm for gung ho manliness, no spectator will be able to avoid pondering the question: Is such sacrifice worth it? Given the grim and painful nature of much of the drama, even critical plaudits and heavy promotion will have trouble pushing this Universal release beyond mid-level box office success.”

We will be attending the showing that starts at 7:00. Admission to this showing is free, and our group will be admitted ahead of everyone else. We have guaranteed seats. Please read the following directions so you understand how this will work:
The twenty-five guaranteed seats will be distributed by signing up for this event on a first-come first-served basis. If you end up as one of the twenty-five "finalists" you will get guaranteed admission if you show up no later than 6:00 outside of the Thornton Place Cinemas on the street level just outside of the glass doors. Please show up earlier if you can since I have a large number of people to check-in. When you meet me I will give you a name tag which you will need to show me when we enter the theater. Please note that if you are a no show or cancel at the last minute you will not be eligible for free preview showings in the future though you are still welcome to participate in any other cinema club meetup. Persons who had spots to past free preview showings or showings at my home or a reservation to the Academy Awards viewing party and who did not show up will have their name removed from the "attending" list; I have your names. You can only sign up for yourself; the "guest" option has been turned off. If another person shows up with you he or she might get admitted once everyone with an RSVP and anyone on the waiting list who shows up on a speculation basis has been admitted.
Our group will be admitted to the theater around 6:20 so if you arrive after that time there will be no way that I can have you admitted or pass a general admission ticket to you (which I don't have anyway).
Meet me at the theater in in the area just outside of the entrance (i.e., glass doors); do not go past the ticket taker and up the escalator at this time. I am an Asian American who wears glasses and who will probably be wearing a hat of some type (beret, rain hat, African skull cap). There is a head shot of me in the photo section of my profile so you can see for whom to look. My cell phone,[masked], will be on until 6:20 or thereabouts. Please note that I use a "dumbphone" (no frills, no data capability though it does meet military standard 810G - eg, it will operate in a sand storm) so do not send me any text messages or post a comment on the web site - I will not see these.
There typically is plenty of free parking in the Thornton Place garage, in the transit center parking lot across the street to the west, and in the Northgate mall to the north. The theater is on several bus routes; check Metro for details.
Please note that this advance screening “Lone Survivor” is being held four weeks prior to its general release. Consequently security will be beefed up this evening. You might be subject to an inspection of all your bags and be subject to a body scan with a hand held metal detector. Further, you might be required to check in any device that might be used as a video recorder which includes any and all cell phones even those without still or video cameras. If you don't want to leave these devices in a bag with your name on it please leave it in your car.
A note about the meetup.com reservation system. Up until two days before the date of this event the system will be set to “automatic”. This means that if someone who has a spot on the event changes his or her RSVP to “not attending” the top person on the waiting list will get the spot. Two days before the event the system will be switched to “manual”. When someone with an RSVP changes his or her reservation to “not attending” an email will be sent to EVERYONE on the waiting list, and the first person to go to the web site and claim the spot will be added to the RSVP list. The fact that you receive an email announcing the opening does not mean that you have the spot.
There will be an optional food and beverage stop at the conclusion of the film. Note: conclusion = after all of the credits have rolled by. Meet me just outside of the theater near the box office. If you use the restroom notify someone so that we do not leave without you
