Nebraska at the Uptown

Although it's been out for awhile, there hasn't been a meetup for Alexander Payne's Nebraska, nor have I seen the film.  This meetup will solve both issues.

Nebraska is the story of Woody (Bruce Dern, who won the top acting prize at Cannes for this role), "an aging, booze-addled father [who] makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son [played by Will Forte] in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize." (from the IMDB page)  If you've seen any of Payne's other films (Election, Sideways, The Descendents), you know what you're in for: humor which comes out of some dark places, and heart.

Here's a 3 1/2 star review from Christy Lemire:

We will be meeting around 6:30 for the 6:45 show.  Buy your ticket outside, then meet me in the lobby.  PLEASE DO NOT ASK SIFF STAFF WHERE THE SEATTLE CINEMA CLUB IS MEETING, AS THEY WILL NOT KNOW.  THEY ARE TRAINED TO ANSWER MOVIE QUESTIONS, NOT TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR GROUP.  THAT'S WHAT I'M FOR. :-)  If you don't see me in the lobby and it's past 6:30, feel free to text me on my cell, or find a seat in the theater and then find me after the movie.  I will have my cell phone on until a few minutes before the previews start.  In either case, make sure you sign in with me.  I do take attendance.  Once the end credits have finished, we will regroup in the lobby (and wait for people who are using the restrooms) before heading out to one of the local eating establishments for an optional post-film discussion.

While the film (sadly) did not win any Golden Globes, it was nominated for four, including Best Movie Drama, Best Director, and Best Actor (June Squibb was up for Supporting Actress).

If you are coming by car, SIFF has free parking after 6 pm!  Just drive up to the loading zone and ask for a parking pass when you buy your ticket.  Staff will direct you to the lot, which is just around the corner.  For bus people, a ton of buses stop near the Uptown, so take your pick.

Hope to see all of you there!

Agree, this was a wonderful film, exactly as the rest of you are describing it...tender and funny. I think Greg hits the nail on the head saying that "he has great affection for his main characters", it definitely paid off having that level of respect for his characters. And I think this may also be my favorite Payne film.
And of course it was nice to meet you all. :)

I haven't seen every Alexander Payne movie, but of the four I've seen (Election, Sideways, The Descendents, this one), this may be the best of the lot. Deciding to shoot it in black and white and with Bruce Dern have a lot to do with that, as does the deep affection he has for his main characters. A wonderful film, and a great group to discuss it with afterwards. Thank you, Charlene and Leslie, for impromptu organizing when my bus was delayed, and for all the people who came out to see the film!

Traffic is bad and buses are late, so I'm running a few minutes behind schedule. Once you buy your tickets, just hang out in the lobby until I arrive.
