"Maidentrip" - SIFF's Women in Cinema series @ Uptown

We will be attending the 6:30 showing of the film “Maidentrip” at the SIFF/Uptown Theater in the lower Queen Anne neighborhood. This film is presented as part of SIFF's festival of Women in Cinema. “Maidentrip” is a documentary film of how Laura Dekker, a 14 year old Dutch girl, sailed around the world by herself in a rebuilt rat trap yacht making her the youngest person to have done a solo circumnavigation of our planet. She had to go to court when she was 13 because the Dutch child welfare agency thought this adventure was too much for a young teen to handle. Here is a description of this film copied from rottentomatoes.com:

“14-year-old Laura Dekker sets out-camera in hand-on a two-year voyage in pursuit of her dream to be the youngest person ever to sail around the world alone. In the wake of a year-long battle with Dutch authorities that sparked a global storm of media scrutiny, Laura now finds herself far from land, family and unwanted attention, exploring the world in search of freedom, adventure, and distant dreams of her early youth at sea. Jillian Schlesinger's debut feature amplifies Laura's brave, defiant voice through a mix of Laura's own video and voice recordings at sea and intimate vérité footage from locations including the Galapagos Islands, French Polynesia, Australia, and South Africa.”

A camera ship did not tail Laura's yacht. She was given a hand held camera and several waterproof cameras were mounted in her yacht and then she set sail.

Here is a preview of the film:

This film is so new that it has not received widespread distribution. It will most likely appeal to a niche audience that enjoys bold adventure stories. “Maidentrip” has only a 60 rating at rottentomatoes.com, but that is based on a total of five reviews. Here is a link to the review that appeared in the Hollywood Reporter:

Maidentrip review

This film has standard SIFF admission pricing ($11 general admission, $6 SIFF members).

Meet me in the lobby of the SIFF/Uptown theater starting around 6:10. I am an Asian male who wears glasses and who will probably be wearing a cap of some type (beret, black rain hat, African brimless cap (kufi). A head shot of me appears in the photo section of my profile so you can see for whom to look. My cell phone,[masked], will be on until the start of the program. Please note that I use a “dumbphone” which is voice only (no data capability but it does meet Mil Standard 810G and can operate in a wide range of hostile environments such as a sandstorm) so do not text me or post a message on the web – I will not be able to read these.

There will be an optional beverage and snack stop at the conclusion of this film (i.e., after all the credits have rolled by). Meet me in in the lobby of the theater at which time we will decide which establishment to patronize.

Hi all. I might be late for this meetup. It's 4:40 and I have to prepare some documents before I leave work. If I don't see you before the film we will meet in the lobby afterwards to plan a social hour.

Phooey! I'm teaching a 3-day class beginning at 8am Friday. I need a full night's rest before I go in to set up at 7am. I really wish I could have made this film....
    Enjoy the movie for me!

I will be bringing my 14 year-old daughter along for this movie. If she is welcome to join the group's post movie meeting, for this particular event, George let me know.

Sue: Your daughter is most welcome to attend the post film discussion. It will be interesting to hear what someone who is Laura Dekker's age has to say about sailing around the world by his/her self.
