Valley 6 Drive-in Theater - last of a dying breed

This description was updated on Thursday, July 14. The dining time at Applebee's is 6:15. Please let me know by phone [masked]) or by email ([masked]) before 4:00 pm on Saturday if you will be attending dinner so that I can reserve enough seats. Meet me in the parking lot no later than 7:45 so that we can select the film(s) to view this evening; we do not all have to attend the same screening area.Applebee's is close to an Albertson's supermarket. I will have a smiley balloon so you can identify my car in this parking lot and at the theater. If you do not caravan to the theater with us you will need to call me to determine which film(s) we will be viewing before buying a ticket to the drive in (there is no generic ticket - you must a purchase a ticket for a specific screening area). One of the selections will be the latest Harry Potter film paired with (ugh) The Green Lantern which I am thinking of attending though I am open to all other programs except Zookeeper and Mr. Penguin. It the forecast is for rain this meetup will be cancelled and it will be posted around 4:00 pm. If it is just overcast the meetup will take place as scheduled. Last year I cancelled because of rain and never found a data on which to reschedule.

At this cinema meetup it is not what films we will be seeing but where we will be seeing them. We will be patronizing the last drive-in theater located in the greater Seattle area - the Valley “6” located in Auburn. This will be a chance to become acquainted with an American cultural icon before it disappears from the scene.

In 2009 I organized a meetup at the Puget Place Drive-in located in South Everett. Guess what? The land was sold in 2010, the theater was demolished, and a medical clinic now stands at this site. Most of the drive-ins remaining in Western Washington are found in smaller towns such as Port Orchard and Port Townsend. Here is a link to a recent Seattle Times article about the last of the drive-in theaters:

The Valley 6 has multiple screens and can accommodate 3000 vehicles. For an admission price of $9.00 (senior admission is $5.50) one can see a double feature of first run films. Patrons must have an AM radio, either in car or portable, to receive the audio portion of the films. The theater opens at 8:00 and the first show is at dusk (around 9:30 pm). We will arrive a bit early to ensure that we get good parking spots and have to time to socialize and enjoy the drive-in milieu before the program begins.

We will meet in the parking lot of Applebee’s Restaurant in Auburn (1441 D Street, Auburn 98002) at 7:45 (check for updates on the day of the event to see if the time has changed), decide on which film program to attend, and drive to the drive-in theater which is 2 miles away. I will be driving a dark blue Honda CRV (look for license plate “WARIS-L”). I am an Asian male who wears glasses and who will be wearing a beret. Note: rain cancels this event – it will be rescheduled. Applebee’s will also be the place for an optional group dinner prior to the showing. We will meet there at 6:15. Here is their menu:

Please let me know if you are planning to dine at Applebee's so that I can hold an appropriate number of spots at the restaurant; please contact me no later than 4:00 pm on Saturday. Bring a folding chair if you wish to sit outside of your vehicle. Also, please note that tall vehicles must park in a special section of the drive-in. By tall they mean 5 ft 4 in or greater. There are limited parking spots for tall vehicles - please contact me ASAP so that we can work out a strategy. If you need to contact me on the evening of the event please call my cell phone[masked]-7850. This event is listed with the Seattle Cinema Club, Seattle Singles, Eastside Singles, Urban on a Budget, and 50+ Singles meetup groups. If you can offer a carpool ride or are looking for a ride please post this with your reservation (indicate driver or rider, and where you are located).

My weather report says 50:50 chance of rain. How suspenseful!

Just checking in to see if anyone has space in a vehicle. I'll bring popcorn!

Is anyone bringing a pickup with a mattress in back? Or a big ol' gas guzzler with bench seats? If so, I'd love to tag along with you. Sadly, my little fuel efficient Japanese car is not made for the drive in experience.
