The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a witty comedy-drama about a group of British retirees (Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith) who decide to "outsource" their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the place a shell of its former self. Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are gradually won over by the ever-optimistic young manager (Dev Patel, the star of Slumdog Millionaire) and forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past. Directed by John Madden (The Debt, Shakespeare in Love).

Besides the touching story this was a great travelogue to India - scenes could have been taken from a Rick Steve's style video. It was interesting to see the scenes with the "untouchables" - the caste system still lives in that country. Finally, the background music, particularly the airport and ground travel scenes, was a delight to the ears.

Norma: Most folks know Bill NIghy as Davy Jones from the Pirates of the Caribbean series. If you haven't seen it already try to catch the made for TV film "Page 8" on PBS (it was rerun a few months ago) where he plays a British intelligence service officer who discovers that the Prime Minister (Ralph Finnes) is lying to the public. Great role! Rachael Weitz is also in it.

I saw it several months ago, & would go again, but I'm busy that night. It's a real sweet surprise of a film, & just goes to prove Bill Nighy is a thinking woman's crumpet. He certainly IS mine!
