All Seattle progressives are invited to join the Nuclear Free NW Coalition at this action oriented event:
"Why Not Nuclear? Closing the Reactor on the River"
1 - 2 pm: Meet and greet; "Why Not Nuclear" presentation
2 - 4 pm: Fan out into Seattle neighborhoods to place flyers calling on Seattle to quit the nuclear business
The Northwest's only nuclear plant, the Columbia Generating Station, is an aging reactor on the Columbia River. It shares many of the design flaws with the reactors that melted down in Japan in 2011 - and produces 50,000 pounds of nuclear waste each year.
Seattle City Light and 27 other public utilities who own CGS have the power to close it down. A new economic study shows that closing it would save ratepayers $1.7 billion. We cannot afford to let this aging, dirty, and dangerous reactor continue to threaten the Columbia River and our region with a nuclear catastrophe.
Members of the Nuclear Free NW Coalition include Columbia Riverkeeper, Alliance for Democracy Portland, Physicians for Social Responsibility (OR and WA), Fellowship for Reconciliation, Ground Zero, Sierra Club Activist Network, No Nukes NW, and Heart of America NW.
