Beginner 2 Night Backpack: Glacier Peaks Wilderness or North Cascades NP

This is a beginner/new member trip hosted by Brian and Cameron.  If interested, please select a spot on the "Waitlist" and we will contact you.  We are creating a waitlist group, so we can filter the group accordingly.

The route will be fairly easy, not too much elevation change, with optional side hikes from camp each day.  We will shoot for about 5 miles each day, give or take.  The final trailhead is still unclear, due to spotty trail reports.  More info to follow.  Both the Glacier Peaks and North Cascades have amazing backcountry worthy of many visits.

We will meet Friday night at the Northgate Park and Ride at 7pm, then head north to camp in a campground close to our trailhead, which gives us 2 full days, Sat, Sun and hike out Mon afternoon.

We encourage you to get in touch with each other and make arrangements to share tent space and cooking gear, in order to keep your load light.  Please use the discussion board to ask questions about what to bring and sharing stuff.  We will assume you are signed up for this trip because you are new to backpacking and have little to no experience, so please ask questions.  If you are wondering, others have the same questions.

Our Goals:  Have fun and make this trip awesome, so you fall in love with backcountry life and keep coming back for more!!

Thanks! I think it would also be helpful to have info on where we're going so the Sunday carpoolers can buy a trail map. I might be missing something on the description but I didn't see any specific details on the location, trails, etc.

I will ask Cameron to chime in.

Anybody have suggestions for places to buy backpacking stove fuel? Preferably not the REI downtown and closer to the Greenlake area?

    August 14

    • Martin K

Fred Meyer might have them, there's also an REI up north I think

How many drivers are planning to drive to the Park and Ride? And then on to the trailhead? We need to make sure we are covered for Sun. and Mon. departure folks.

I am coming from the eastside. Northgate is not a big problem, but if there's one other person from the Eastside, it might be worth while to head up 405/I5 directly

      August 14

    • Paige

Hi Martin, I'm from Bellevue Lakemont area. Maybe we can carpool from 405? Do you plan to come back on Sunday or Monday?

Unfortunately something came up and I'm unable to attend. Next time though! Good luck to everyone and be safe.

Are we still planning to go to Kennedy Hot Springs? I got hold of a Ranger and she said was road to trailhead was gated off 10 miles FROM the trailhead since 2003. If plans have changed, it would be good to know so I can bring a map and be generally prepared for where I am going.

I am still in the wait list, when I will find out if I can go or not? I have a Honda Civic and if I can go, there are some more space to fit 2 or 3 more people.

I will be bringing a CR-V (good for 2 other people, 3 maybe if you don't have a lot of gear)

    Have Forest and Interagency Pass
    Have two handheld FRS/GMRS radios

Have an extra backpacking tent for 2
Have an extra stove and pot (bring your own fuel)

If you want to borrow any of the 2 items above, please contact me to confirm.

Would like to confirm the road to trailhead is open (the USFS says road to trailhead inaccessible)

For folks hiking out on Sun, please make sure one of you has a trails map. My list below of what to bring is not exhaustive, first aid kit, iodine tablets, extra warmth layer, nylon straps, other stuff I forgot... Drivers remember to get a NW Forest Pass.

Hi, this is my first backpacking trip and I am excited.
I am also interested in coming back on Sunday. Can Sun folks carpool together? I don't have a car but i can rent one if required.

If you have a stove and a way to boil water, breakfast and dinner cooking can be done in the freeze dried foil pouch containers and all you need is a spoon. Eat simple and light. A few things I like to eat during the day: trail snacks like nuts, power bars, dried fruit, chocolate, lunch: hard cheese, a few tortillas or bagels. Look at the 10 essentials and bring them. Rain gear, tent, fleece, knit hat, ball cap, sunglasses and sunscreen, whistle, lighter, knife, compass, light weight water shoes and good sturdy hiking shoes and a few pairs of hiking socks, 1 set of hiking clothes and 1 set of camp clothes, sleeping clothes are nice, I like to bring a set of car clothes, a sleeping pad and decent bag, water bottle or 2, water filter can be shared, tent and stove can be shared, and a decent fitted pack that fits your size. 4-5 Small stuff sacks for oddball stuff, clothes and food and a 50 foot nylon rope for hanging food. An orange shovel and toiletries.

It seems like a couple folks will be walking out Sunday, that's fine, and perhaps you can carpool home together.

Never done backpacking, what do I need? I have work on Monday , can I come back
    On Sunday?

Ok, thanks for being patient, I figured out how to change the status of your RSVPs, sorry 'bout that. Please meet at the Northgate Park and ride lot, between the movie theater and the bus stops. Be there a touch before 7, as we will not be waiting around very long for late comers. Does anyone have gear questions? I have space for 1 in my car, on the way to the trail, however, will not be returning south, as I live to the north. Bring your NW Forest Pass for parking, as this is most definitely a patrolled parking area. What did I forget?

I'm thinking of renting a tent from REI. But I have nothing to prepare food with. We shouldn't need poles for hiking right?

May need to call dibs on that one spot too. I will know for sure this evening.

And I too live North, Edmonds to be exact. So coming home wouldn't be a problem for me.

Hi folks, I am trying to switch over the waitlist folks to YES RSVP status, thanks for your patience. Good news, we have a trailhead: Kennedy Hot-springs, up Forest Service Road 23 along the White Chuck River, about 10 miles south of Darrington off the Mountain River Highway. This trail is along a river, with 4 or 5 loop options, including Lake Byrne and the PCT. Depending on the volume of hikers Sat. as we get started, we may want to shoot for a stop at the hot springs on Sun. night or Mon. on our way out.
