Bi-weekly Conditioner: Poo Poo Point (Chirico Trailhead)

Question: What’s a bi-weekly conditioner? Answer: Hikes scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays to invigorate your hiking senses, get you out of the gym, making friends and having fun!

*PLEASE READ ALL DETAILS PRIOR TO SIGNING UP FOR THESE HIKES! *

Itinerary

5:45pm – Depart Eastgate Park and Ride (WEST LOT) ***We always meet in the WEST LOT at the Eastgate Park and Ride. Please note, with changes of season we will be leaving promptly at 5:45pm from the WEST LOT. [WE DO NOT MEET NOT UNDER THE OVERPASS…go to the other side-people keep going to the other lot and get left behind!]


6:15pm - Depart Trail head (approximation)

Requirements



The 10 essentials. Nutrition (food), hydration (water), insulation (rain gear/extra clothing, GLOVES!), emergency shelter (small emergency bivy), navigation (map & compass), first aid kit & repair kit (for you!), sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), illumination (headlamp). There are always other items you should carry with you, but you will learn what you need personally. Trekking poles are to your desire. [Evening Hikes you can limit gear by creating smaller kits-use common sense].

Headlamp! The winter bi-weekly conditioners start in the dark. It is recommended you bring a headlamp with extra batteries. [Flashlights, torch, whatever gets you up and down the mountain safely]. *A headlamp check will be conducted at the trailhead…if you do not have one you will be turned away-this is for your safety.

Pace

I personally hike about 3-3.5 mph uphill (about the same coming down).  Understandably, most folks might be at a different pace. The two trails I hike during the winter months are easy for any hiker. I have had folks with various paces arrive for these hikes-you are bound to find someone on the hike at your pace; just know that this is intended to be a conditioner for your personal goals. I will not turn folks away from being too slow. Feel free to contact me with questions.

Rain Policy
I hike, snowshoe, backpack rain, sleet, snow, shine…we live in Washington! Don’t let a little rain stop you from enjoying the outdoors. I’ve never heard of anyone melting from a little rain ;)

Trailheads

During the winter months we will primarily stick to two main trails: Poo Poo Point (Tiger Mountain-Issaquah Alps) and Talus Loop (Mount Si-North Bend). Here is information for both:

POO POO POINT HIKE DETAILS:

Location: Poo Poo Point (#TIGER)

Issaquah Alps -- Tiger Mountain

Department of Natural Resources, South Puget Sound Region

Round Trip: 3ish miles

Elevation Gain: 1650 ft

Highest Point: 1850 ft

Features: Old growth, Mountain views, Wildlife

User info: Dogs allowed on leash.

Driving Directions:

[Don’t follow the directions given on WTA site…use these instead]:Heading East on I-90 take the Front Street Exit (Exit 17). Turn right. Merge onto Front Street (keep left to go straight). You will stay on Front Street, which turns into Issaquah-Hobart Road SE. After about three miles you will see the trail head and landing area for Chirico Trail Head on the left.

TALUS LOOP HIKE DETAILS:

Location: Mount Si/Talus Loop

North Bend Area

Department of Natural Resources, South Puget Sound Region

Round Trip: 3.7 miles

Elevation Gain: 1750 ft

Highest Point: 2120 ft

Features: Old growth

User info: Dogs allowed on leash, Discover Pass required


Driving Directions to Trailhead (Per WTA site):

From Seattle drive east on I-90 to exit 32 (436th Avenue SE). Turn left (north) over the freeway and drive 0.5 mile to North Bend Way. Turn left (west), and in 0.25 mile turn right (north) on Mount Si Road. The large trailhead parking lot is on the left, 2.5 miles down the road.

Each week the hike will change. If you have other hikes that you know well, or suggestions: I am willing to try new trails! Always up for a new adventure!

Many of my groups like to go out for a bite and a beer after. You are under no obligation to do so, but it is one of my favorite parts of the evenings!
