Learn Git with SeattleJS

In this free three hour course limited to 95 participants and hosted at Redfin's beautiful downtown office, come learn the fundamentals of version control with Git.

For the uninitiated, Git is like 'save game' for your entire directory structure - if something goes wrong, you'll have the power to go back in time to when your code was working. You'll also be able to deploy specific saves, called 'commits' to cloud application platforms like Heroku and GitHub and interact with large and complex open source projects that use Git to keep things straight. Those, plus many more tasks Git is used for by professional developers across the web.

Core topics covered include: configuring Git on your machine, basic directory navigation in bash, working with local repositories, working with remote repositories, working with branches, checking for differences between commits, pull requests, merging and rebasing.

Prior to joining CodeFellows, one of the students in their current class was learning Git on her own and got frustrated, so wrote a song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlpzTM4euCQ

Funny stuff. Ryan, Ryan, and Colin, great work organizing and running this event. Fantastic idea.

Also, I thought I had left a comment on this meetup, but I agree with everyone that this workshop was great. Looking foward to the jquery workshop in August!

Not sure if it was because the guy behind me kept taking or that the presenter was talking too quiet into the mic at times.. but rebasing still eludes me... I have also read this post to anti-rebasing.. http://geekblog.oneandoneis2.org/index.php/2013/04/30/please-stay-away-from-rebase

Thanks for putting this event together, folks. Really good to see a group of people honing their craft.

A nice thing to keep in mind when you're working with git that wasn't necessarily appropriate to mention last night is commit style. Fortunately, Scott Chacon has written a much nicer treatment than I could communicate:

    http://git-scm.com/book/ch5-2.html#Commit-Guidelines

Great read and I've found that adhering to the style really enforces a lot of other things that make the mechanics of what we were learning about last night much easier, e.g. getting you in the mindset of describing your change well to others for review purposes, making sure your changes are orthogonal and easy to rebase, cleanly merge, revert, or even find a problem with bisect.

I encourage taking the time to think about it.

Thanks for the great workshop! I came away a lot more comfortable with Git, and finally figured out what rebase and bisect were all about. Special thanks to my mentor for his help, insights, and sage advice!

Thanks to Jamie, I lucked out on a lab partner who knew his stuff and picked up some Sublime Text tips to boot. And thanks to the organizers. Looking forward to JQuery.

It was a lot slower than I would have liked. I have never used the rebase or bisect commands, though, so I'm glad we got to them.

I know that I showed up without a laptop and had to make some requests. I was able to take some pictures of several slides and I'll get to learning on my own.
Thank you for hosting this event.
I look forward to the next one.

Very informative. Could've used a little more time to stay up-to-speed, but I understand you gotta keep it moving. Great mentors!
