Short Ride on Whidbey Island: Novice + All Levels

Some of you guys and gals expressed an interest in doing some novice/shorter rides so I wanted to let you know we're doing one on Whidbey Island. Though this ride is especially for newer riders to gain more experience to feel more comfortable in longer/group rides, riders of all-levels are welcome to ride and help show others the ropes.

Here's the route: http://goo.gl/maps/UawL selected by Elizabeth! Thanks for helping to choose!!! Once on Whidbey Island it's 84.6 miles and mainly remote backroads. Great for practicing your cornering skills. :D

The plan is to meet at 11:45am and gas up before heading out at noon to catch the 12:30pm the ferry. I highly advise getting your ferry ticket online for Mukilteo/Clinton (can get 1-way, then back return on way back or RT) so we can all by-pass the ticket booth (can't bypass booth from Clinton). Meeting before the ferry to show you how to do that if you haven't done it before or if this is your first ferry trip on your bike. I'll go over my group ride spiel before we head out.

We'll have a brief stop half way through (Coupeville area or maybe somewhere along a beach), so bring snacks if you'd like.

If this is your first group ride, check out my group riding tips from the Message Board.

Guests are welcome!

Questions, let me know.  ~Claudette

Claudette, Kalaloch is out on the Olympic Peninsula... on the coast..... However, there is definitely good food on Whidbey Island.... Im trying to see if I can do the Eastern Wa camping trip ride this weekend, but may just do a drive by, have a beer with you crazies and head back over da pass....

Sounds like a road trip to discover the best places for clam chowder. Hey, any excuse to ride, eh? So where is this place? Haven't had theirs, yet, so Christopher's is still the best for me, IMNSHO. LOL.

  • Robert D

Claudette, beg to differ with ya sweetheart, but Kalaloch Lodge has the BEST Clam Chowder... :) IMHO

Many thanks to Claudette for organizing a beginner friendly ride, something I've been meaning to do for awhile. Good day for some people to push their comfort zone out a little by riding in a group and on wet roads. Congrats and thanks to all who came out.

Despite the rain, a great time! I felt so welcome on my putt putt.

By the way, a bolt fell out of my center kickstand somewhere between lunch and the ferry. It was rubbing my back tire, so I had to stop at an auto parts store and get a new one...they helped me out and it works great now!!! yippie! (a little bit scary...I wonder how long it was rubbing!) Rain pants are totally in shreds! lol

  • Treela

That was so much fun! Thank you Claudette for letting me come and to everyone behind me who had to go a little slower than they probably wanted to on those hills. I can't wait to go back on a sunny day and do it again...all the way to deception pass!!!!

  • Claudette

If it wasn’t for the rain, we might had a picnic on the beach instead of grabbing a bite at Christopher’s and missed experiencing the absolute BEST f****k clam chowder I’ve ever had!!! :D The weather was nice on the way back-even had some dry roads, making it seem much shorter heading back than going up. I like that route so much it was even fun in the rain & doing the speed limit. LOL.

So glad we still had such a great turn out for this ride. 17 bikes, one riding 2 up. To each their own about riding in the rain. Honestly if I wasn’t leading the ride, I may have turned around once I hit the rain in Bothell. But it’s one of those things you just have to go one to see how it turns out. And as it turned out, we were drizzled on for maybe a third of the ride and that was just on the way to Coupeville.

Libbie - Claudette was absolutely correct in her assessment of the riding conditions in PNW, but I love your attitude! Hope to ride with you soon.

Thank you Claudette and everyone else that was riding today, you all made my first group ride tremendous despite the rain.

We're at Christopher's in Coupville for lunch.

For those that have changed their minds about this ride today :( - just be sure to change your RSVPs so I can have an idea of numbers. Thanks!

Awesome. I was just going to say that after the last week, my gills and webbing were starting to dry out ;) I'll definitely be there.

Screw that. We're out :-((( stupid Seattle weather.

    July 15, 2012

  • Claudette

Not raining here, not raining on Whidbey so the ride is on. The streets may be a litttle wet, but as long as your tires are in good condition that shouldn't be an issue. If you are going to ride in the PNW gotta learn how to ride in the rain and doing so on a 'novice' ride is the best time. I'll even give tips to help you feel more confident (coming from someone who's hydroplaned, rode 6 hrs in the driving rain at the end of an iron butt ride, ridden in freezing rain, snow, hail and on ice).

I am reluctant to go if it is wet, and it is still raining here in Shoreline. I am a newer rider and not comfortable riding in wet conditions yet.

    July 15, 2012

  • Treela

It rained last night and it's wet and cloudy/foggy right now, but the weather report looks good for the rest of the day. Supposed to clear up. I'm a little worried about the wet roads. Hope they dry out. I'm not going to be online after an hour or so, so please let me know if anyone is coming.

Cool Treela, let us know about the weather, I am crossing my fingers tightly that it works out, since I am really looking forward to this ride!

I'm here on the ferry. It's beautiful. I have high hopes for tomorrow. also, i'm here, so I committed. Claudette, if you cancel can you leave this event up so that those who can/want to still do it can? I'll be happy to post weather conditions in the morning for Clinton.

If you can call us that would be great...had a q. for you. [masked]

Claudette, even though I've lived here almost 20 years, I've only ridden a ferry once......23 years ago! Can I just buy my tickets there after you show Jordan & I what to do? Please let us know! Thanks ----M&J

    July 14, 2012

  • Claudette

The weather forecast keeps changing minute by minute so we'll have to play this by ear. If it's raining in the morning (coming from Redmond), I'll call off the ride and post something, but you all have the route and can do it if I'm not there if you want. If I do call off the ride, I plan to redo within the timeframe of the ferry ticket, I think 3 months. Wish I could be more definate. Will post update either way in the a.m.

Also, Claudette, I was planning to go to the Island early, possibly tonight, to visit my mom, so I would like to meetup with the group in Clinton. I'll email you with more details.

    July 14, 2012

  • Treela

Weather looks wishy washy for Whidbey. My mom says they've had hail and thunder showers and drizzle, etc. It looks like Sunday might be better, but with light showers. I will keep my eye on the weather and if the outlook improves, I'll still join, but I'm nervous about getting wet on such a long ride.

Also my first group ride. I will be driving from downtown Seattle area. If anybody want to ride together from here drop me a line. Looking forward to the ride and meeting new riders.

Do you have a non-my Maps link? when you save routes to My Maps the ability to print off a single set of directions is lost.

If not I can certainly recreate the route in the standard Google Maps interface.

    July 13, 2012

  • Claudette

Everyone, please review and print up a copy of the route to help ensure we all stay together. See you Sunday!!

I think I may have a route mapped out to get us to Mukilteo Speedway, bypassing Aurora. Starting on Meridian in Shoreline.

    July 12, 2012

  • Amy L H.

I am totally cool with side roads Treela, I just don't really know which ones to take. If you have it worked out already, then let's do that. I am guessing we just need to figure out how long it will take to get up to the gas station from Shoreline. Where do you want to meet up and when?

    July 12, 2012

  • Treela

Ken/Amy, Sounds like we can caravan, (I'm 10 minutes from Shoreline); although I'd prefer to take side roads rather than 99. It would be stop and go forever on 99. Does that sound like any fun to either of you?

    July 11, 2012

  • Amy L H.

Treela, I will be heading there from Shoreline and plan to take Aurora up to the Mukilteo Speedway. If you want to meet up with me and head up there together let me know.

    I-99 all the way North?

    July 11, 2012

  • Treela

It takes me a long time to get to the ferry, but I can do it. Would any one be coming from Seattle and like to ride to the ferry together off the highway? I've gone through Richmond Beach and Edmonds before. P.S. I'm from Whidbey Island and have family there. If the ride becomes too much for me in length (considering the extra riding I'll have to do to get there), I have an "out". But I would love to get some time in with this group! Thanks Claudette!

    July 9, 2012

  • Claudette

@ John and Marc - Welcome to you first group ride. Check out the hyperlink I have in the details about group riding tips.

    July 9, 2012

  • Claudette

@Ian, yes, on the way back from the Tulip Ride we went this way. Depending how we do on time we might double back for this. Really want to do Ft Casey Rd. Thanks for volunteering to ride sweep. Don't think Tina can make it so I'll take you up on it.

    July 9, 2012

  • Claudette

@Treela, I think as long as you can get to the ferry and go about 50/55, you should be good for this ride.

    July 9, 2012

  • John

First time to ride with a group .

    July 9, 2012

  • Ian

Claudette, just north of Fort Casey there is a very small detour worth taking. Hill Rd gives you a great view of the sea and it has easy beach access for a quick stop (limited parking but can usually squeeze bikes in somewhere). Worth taking just for the view but there are a couple of nice corners too.

    July 9, 2012

  • Claudette

Whidbey Island it is! Okay if we just go up to Penn Cove? If we do the entire Island it'll be well over 3 hrs and that's not including ferry time. Here's the route from a gas station near the ferry termnal:http://goo.gl/maps/UawL. Want to show all how to bypass the car line. Will update the details with finalized route and how to get ferry tickets ahead of time (recommended).

How about if I add "All-levels" and keep Novice since this ride is especially for newer riders to gain more confidence in group rides. Did one today for the Lady Riders and they appreciated it. :)

Claudette, please drop the "novice" from the title. "Short" and "ride" can stay!
