This is very sad news. He was a great rider who believed in supporting and building community here in the northwest. He even participated in our video contests.

Rest in peace Randy.

I am extremely sad to let you know that my old friend Randy “The X-Man” Upshaw was killed Sunday morning in Oregon after hitting a deer. http://www.komonews.com/news/local/W-Wash-motorcyclist-killed-in-collision-with-deer-in-Ore-212769701.html.

If you didn’t know Randy personally, you knew him from the annual rides he introduced to Meetup:

  • End of Winter Run
  • 3 Pass Blast ((w/ Country Boys BBQ)
  • End of Summer Run

Randy was an avid member of the first online motorcycle group PNW Road Riders Yahoo group I joined back in[masked] and after a stint running a Meetup group, moved to Northwest Sport Touring to Facebook. He ran http://nwbikers.com where he shared a myriad of videos from his extensive travels.
Randy was a great guy and great biker. While I didn’t get to ride with him often, he was always a lot of fun. Even when I was new to group riding and the only gal at times in the group, he was always accepting and supportive. I remember when I led my first group ride to Neah Bay, I was so honored that he came and thrilled that I was able to show this avid biker a new road or two on this trip. Of the several fond memories I have of Randy, one was of a video he took of me on the PNWRoadRiders Pelican Run Ride where, after I hit a deer myself the previous fall, he videotaped me with a bicyclist trying to pass me because I was so slow in the corners with Phantom of the Opera’s “Music of the Night” playing in the background. Silly guy. So wish your deer encounter hadn’t taken you away from us. You will be sorely missed.
