HIKE THE GARDEN OF THE GODS

  • Dec 1, 2012 · 10:00 AM

Folks, I have cancelled the after dinner hike at Mason's. Hopefully this will help out with the carpooling situation a bit better. 48 carpool comments is extremely annoying as well as confusing. Please bring your lunch/munchies/snacks and drinks and we'll find somewhere to eat, drink and have a good time.

It was August of 1859 when two surveyors started out from Denver City to begin a town site, soon to be called Colorado City. While exploring nearby locations, they came upon a beautiful area of sandstone formations. M. S. Beach, who related this incident, suggested that it would be a "capital place for a beer garden" when the country grew up. His companion, Rufus Cable, a "young and poetic man", exclaimed, "Beer Garden! Why it is a fit place for the Gods to assemble. We will call it the Garden of the Gods."

This is my favorite hike during the winter months. There is something very magical and spiritual about this area when the snow adds to the personality of the park. I would like to meet at the visitor center to use the facilities; there is a snack bar, gift shop and a 20 minute documentary of how the Garden of the Gods was created. You should pick up one of the free maps the gift shop provides. We will do our best to hike to all of the well known rock sculptors.

We’ll begin the hike from the visitor center and work ourselves down towards the main gift shop where most of the well known areas are. The gift shop is one of the best in Colorado.

I would safely say we will be walking around 7miles round trip depending which formations we’ll want to go see. My favorite is the Window Formation. This is the most well known of the formations in the park. You just peek inside the Window and see Pike’s Peak as if it were framed by the formation.

Directions to The Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center
From I-25 take exit #146 (Garden of the Gods Road) Go west (towards the mountains) for 2.5 miles then turn left onto 30th St. Drive over a mile and the Visitor Center will be on the left.

Be careful driving over Monument Hill.

Have a great week everyone!!!
Sincerely,
Don

Sometimes it just nice to stroll aimlessly and go for what has been created around you without a lot of worries! Nice day, great people and Jill steering the boat so I didn't have to drive!

Erika, the parking lot is a very large parking lot. I was concerned about the carpooling because it seems there was a lot of confusion but the comment section is for carpooling information so I was out of line when I commented that we need to stop so many comments regarding carpooling as they are sent to everyone as emails unless you know how to turn this option off. I really don't know who is coming from Aurora.
